Sib. 7.1.3: Trouble Hiding Staff
Posted by Peter G. Rockas - 14 Apr 09:12PM (edited 14 Apr 10:07PM)
At the beginning and ending of this score there are 4-bar repeats. I was able to hide the 4-bars at the beginning, but when I try to do the same with the last 4-bars, nothing happens. Am I missing something here?
Thanks,
Peter

I tried opening this with Sib 7.1.3 and Sib 7.5--each time I got the attached message about missing fonts,(see attachment) and chose "Use Defaults" but fonts arent being substituted.

Thanks Bob

Your repeat barlines are incorrectly entered. It looks as if you've dragged them. Select and delete the repeat barline. Select the barline and add the repeats. Sibelius treats them as barlines and positions them on top of normal barlines.
I'm not clear what you are trying to hide.

As Bob indicates, the fonts you are using are non-standard, well, not on my set-up! I imported a housestyle to view.

You might like the look of 'wings on repeat barlines':

Engraving rules>barlines - check 'wings on repeat barlines'.

Hi guys,

Bob,
Sorry, I keep forgetting that I use a mish-mash of fonts mostly designed by Nor Eddine; Anastasia, BopMusic, NotTextExtra, RealScore, and other fonts as whim dictates ;o) I need to create a House Style of default fonts to use when contacting the Forum.
Peter
PS: This jpg shows what it looks like with the fonts I use.

Roy,
Finally solved the problem. I first tried as you suggested but that didn't work. I tried removing all repeats and fine barlines and still no luck. This did spark a thought that maybe something else may have been incorrectly entered or that somehow something got corrupted so I added 5 new bars at the end, transferred the notes and voilà, it worked!

I have been using the wings but they must not have transferred over due to the font issue.

I created a House Style using mainly the Reprise font. Let me know how this revised version shows with the Reprise fonts.

Thanks for your help on this.
Peter

You could have added a second attachment by Editing your message and selecting it. The first one may look like it's gone, but it hasn't.

Your Reprise version came across OK. Some clefs and key signatures are missing, the ones that ARE there are strangely positioned.

Maybe you omitted clefs etc. on purpose? I know this is a fetish with some followers of lazy, unionised New York copyists from a certain era :-)

Apart from other considerations (could this possibly AID accurate reading?) I'd be wary of doing it when the number of staves chops and changes from system to system. It's rather confusing.

I spent many years using 'Fake Books' and hand-written parts in this format and, for standard type songs, it isn't really a problem. Space and speed were the main drivers for omitting clef/key sig.

There were lots of shortcuts when writing by hand that are no longer necessary.

I think this format is gradually disappearing since you have to fight Sibelius so hard to achieve this look.

I agree with Laurence, anything that helps the player get it 'off the page' accurately gets my vote - but if it works for you........

Hi Roy,

Disappearing! I've always thought that I was ahead of the curve and that Sibelius had yet to catch up with me!-)

Yes, Fake Books are where I learned to score and with the music and gigs I have one page a tune generally does fine. I could see Laurence's point on confusion being a factor in more complicated score though.

Regards,
Peter

Hi Laurence,

Well, while I'm not one "of the followers of lazy, unionised New York copyists from a certain era" but possibly guilty on other charges of being slothful and lazy;o)

Also, living on the west coast, Seattle, requires that I live up to the myth of being notorious for going our own way;o)

I do make it a practice to make sure that the cleft and key are on the first staff/system of the page. I most always can get a tune on one page but once in a while it takes two.

Thanks for the info on adding more than one attachment.

Regards,
Peter
