Sib. 7.1.3: Sibelius and NoteFlight
Posted by WoodyS - 14 Apr 04:13PM
Couldn't help but notice in a recent Sibelius article at the Sibelius blog a mention of a tool called Noteflight - recently acquired by Hal Leonard. Just wondering what others think about the product and how it might interact with Sibelius.

My quick review is that it is not in the same league as Sibelius of Finale, but still may be useful for entering music sketches on the fly or when you are on the road. I see it has XML import and export capabilities.

Anyone have any additional thoughts, particularly on how the two products might complement one another?

Hi,

To be a music notation software, Noteflight (NF) is not yet as complete as Sibelius; especially on the implementation of the articulations and symbols. So far, I have found that:

- Fermata doesn't work in NF.
- Accelerando-Ritardando also doesn't work.
- Decrescendo doesn't work with altered notes.

I also do an experiment with NF export-import feature. NF can interpret musicXML from Sibelius good enough. So far, I only found two problems:

- Imported chord symbols into NF is not fully correct/not similar, especially for complex chord names.
- Importing semiquaver triplets to NF doesn't work, I always lost a note or two.
- Also, NF doesn't have feature for exporting score to PDF, they rely on print as PDF method.

And my personal opinion is that:

- Noteflight is not yet as flexible as Sibelius in order to 'working faster'.
- Sibelius 7 sounds is still much better then NF crescendo sound.

I'm sure NF is developing, and fast. I'm using NF, just in case Scorch NPAPI terminated and update too late.

I didn't experiment NF in depth nor I used the crescendo version but i tried the free version, as I teach in junior (K12) school.
I agree with ronald, in general: a good software but not as powerful as Sibelius is.
Very useful for my guitar pupils the tablature option (not present, on the contrary, on musescore).
Very useful too the possibility to embed songs in a wiki or a web site in general...

It never occurred to me that Noteflight would become serious competition to a tool like Sibelius. Rather, my thought was, that given its portability (it can be accessed from anywhere on the web) it might make a good sub tool or something that creators can use on the fly and then export to a full functioned tool like Sibelius.

Just wondered what the thoughts were of others.

Thank you for your response.

As an educator, I am looking forward to Sibelius implementing free score access in their Cloud Publishing platform. As this may be some considerable time in coming, I am tempted to move to 'Noteflight'. One aspect that impresses me with Noteflight is the ability to synchronise with youtube videos, as shown in this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7RQOuDskTk
Can Sibelius also synchronise to youtube videos in a similar way?

Hi Richard,

Although it's on our list to be able to sync playback with external sources, it won't be available soon.
