Sib. 7.5: Trouble loading sounds?
Posted by Douglas Arndt - 10 Apr 05:36AM
I just upgraded from S4 to S7.5. All of my scores convert to Sibelius Sounds and play just fine except one (so far). Every time I open it, I get the "Loading Sounds" status bar that gets to 96% and then goes away. It continues to pop up in the lower right corner of the screen from time to time, always with a lower percentage (e.g., 67%), progresses into the 90's and then goes away again. This happens even when I'm not adding any new instruments or scores. When I hit playback, no sound comes out. The mixer shows signals on all the appropriate instruments. I can switch over to a different score (with the same instrumentation, I might add) and everything plays fine.

Is there a way to find out whether the sounds actually completed loading for a given score? Or am I overlooking some other setting in this particular score?

If it is one particular score, attach it here for others to test.

Try importing one of the Sib 7.5 housestyles.

The mixer displays midi data not audio so this is not an indication that all is well.

The progress bar is not designed to wait for 100% before disappearing.

The progress bar will appear when you add an articulation/playing style - accent/pizz/staccato etc. They require different samples.

Thanks, Roy. It's getting curiouser and curiouser.

I switched to Sib7 Sounds (Lite) and playback worked (altho it didn't sound very good). I switched back to Sib7 Sounds and nothing but silence. I tried importing a 7.5 house style and still nothing.

You mentioned that "The progress bar will appear when you add an articulation/playing style - accent/pizz/staccato etc. They require different samples." I thought it unusual that the progress bar reappeared even though I made no changes at all. I'm not trying to change anything in the score; I'm just trying to make a .wav recording with the new sounds.

Score is attached for your reference.

Just a thought--I tried this and pls see attachment--Sib told me I needed more sounds, and allocated more instances of the DLS player, and it played fine.

I then tried Sib 7 Sounds which took FOREVER to load, and wouldnt play--but Sib 6 Essentials worked fine, as did Sib 7 Lite.

I see your computer specs, and mine are less..but could a 402 measure 52 page score, with about 30+ staves be just too much to handle using Sib 7 Sounds?

Again as I said..just a thought..

Thanks Bob

FWIW, I was able to open this in 7.1.3 with full sounds, and it played just fine. Kind of a fun piece. I have less computer the you both. Size of the file might not be a problem.

I have the same problem as Douglas. After upgrading to Sibelius 7.5, some of my scores only play partially with the full sound library, i.e., some instruments remain silent. As Douglas, I have not problems playing them with the Lite sound set, but that's not really a solution. These same files also played perfectly in Sibelius 7.1.3. For all of these reasons, I think the files themselves are okay.

I have a MacBook Pro, 8 GB RAM, 600 GB SSD, Intel 2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo.

So now I have a smaller test file and can show a reproducible bug (for me anyway).

Methodology:

First, I cut the file size down, from three movements to one. Sib7 sounds still don't play (nor do chamber or jazz, but that's a side issue).

Next, I started taking out instruments one by one. After I removed each instrument, I changed the sound to MIDI then back to Sib7, to force it to reload. I started with the less common instruments: Eb clarinet, alto clarinet, etc, moving on to percussion, then to the saxes.

In the attached file, try running Sib7 sounds. Shouldn't work. Remove the Bass Clarinet part (quad-click, delete). Change sounds to MIDI and play a few notes. Change sounds back to Sib7 and hit Play. Should now work.

If someone else can duplicate my results, it should be enough to open a defect report with Sibelius and get a bug fix.

BTW, I loaded sounds from disk and checked the folder size: 36,848,526,320.

Thanks for the help.

@ Douglas --I can duplicate your results--and I went a step further and reloaded the piece with the Bass Clarinet in, and it wouldnt play again, as at first.

@ Michael--I possibly have experienced this recently with another piece on the forum..the Double Bass wouldn't play one day, but did the next day--Im going to try and find that post and ask if the piece was changed between days.

Thanks Bob

The score seems to play fine here on Sibelius under Windows 7.

I expect this is the same old Mac-only problem that used to plague Mac users of Sibelius Player under Sibelius 7.0/7.1.

I guess that is hasn't been fixed in 7.5, then.

Douglas,

Are you using 32-bit Sibelius or 64-bit Sibelius? (They are both installed on 64-bit Windows, so you need to be careful which one you choose to launch).

Please check on the setting:

Sibelius -> Preferences -> Sibelius Player Options -> Maximum number of channels.

Each possible articulation (whether used in the score or not) of each instrument absorbs one of the limited number of channels in Sibelius Player.

Scores with many staves can exceed the maximum channel setting in Sibelius Player, after which some staves fall silent.

A work-around is to switch to "Sibelius 7 Sounds(Lite)" playback configuration, which economises on numbers of channels used for articulation samples, and synthesises the articulation instead.

If your score works under "Sibelius 7 Sounds(Lite)" and not under the other "Sibelius 7 Sounds", then this is possibly what is happening.

Robin:

Thanks for the heads-up about 32 and 64 bit versions. I didn't realize there were two and the installation program didn't give me an option on which to use. The launch link appears to be invoking the 64-bit version. What difference does that make in terms of using Sib7 sounds?

My max number of channels is set to 128. The bug file I attached has 16 parts with clarinets and others duplicated, so even fewer unique sounds. I have other files with 22 and 26 parts that play just fine. My problem isn't that some staves fall silent, it's that there is no sound at all.

Sib7 Lite sounds are less than useless; they sound worse than MIDI. I'm trying to generate a recording that is as near to performance quality as possible, in an attempt to get conductors to program my arrangement. I don't mind recording one movement at a time, but I need the full range of sounds. At this point, it doesn't look like I'll be able to accomplish my goal and Sib7 sounds are just a big tease.

To my mind, there are at least two distinct defects in Sibelius right now. The first is that my score won't play. The second is that Sibelius acts as though nothing is wrong (i.e., it apparently can't detect that it isn't producing any sound). If my score violates some limitation of Sibelius, I expect it to tell me what it is so that I can make adjustments. Since the new Sibelius sounds are a major selling point, I also expect them to publish the limitations so people who are thinking about upgrading can make an informed decision about whether the new version will suit their purposes.

How does one go about reporting defects to Sibelius so that it can get patched?

Pls see here:

There's a section for reporting bugs, that doesnt seem to be being used much. IMO its also good to bring notice to them here in a thread, and email Sam about them, if he doesnt reply in that thread.

Hi All,

I've posted an updated Bass Clarinet Portato patch on the following KB article:

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/troubleshooting/Unable-to-play-back-some-scores-in-Sibelius-7-5-problem-with-Bass-Clarinet-patch

This should resolve the problem you're having.

I have a problem with the bass clarinet sounds, but I am not sure if it is related to the patch files. I use Sibelius 64-bit version 7.5.1 build 209, Audio Engine v7.5.1.209S, running on Windows 8.1. I'm using Sibelius Sounds 7.5, which I installed 1 year ago, with only a patch update installed in an attempt to correct the bass clarinet play problem; I'm using the Sibelius 7 Sounds -- not the "Lite" or "Chamber" subsets. In the score I am attaching, in bar 112, beat 1, there is an eighth note with a staccato on it; I put it in as a temporary fix. If I remove that staccato, then -- at least on my workstation -- the first note with a staccato following it (bar 124, beat 2) is played "ff" with no staccato.

Any assistance is gratefully appreciated,
Bob
