NotePerformer 1.3.0 Update
Posted by Greg Jones - 08 Apr 10:18PM (edited 08 Apr 10:36PM)
Hi, everyone.

Our friends over at Wallander has updated their NotePerformer software yet again, this time it is 1.3.0.

Wallander has posted this following information in their announcement

New instruments:

Choir (SATB, ah and ohs, soloists and section).
Wind chimes (metal bar chimes).
Accordion (left/right hand, high/low or mixed register).
Bandoneon (left/right hand).
Theremin (modern & tube).

Other news in 1.3.0:

Completely revamped reverb algorithm (again).
Experimental support for falls, scoops, doits, plops and shakes.
A huge number of improvements in sound quality and musical interpretation, all across the library.

Please go to http://www.noteperformer.com/?mode=news for more information.

Download links for NotePerformer users can be found at http://www.wallanderinstruments.com/update/

Good to see a theremin in there, I can't believe it wasn't a standard GM instrument! I have to say though, it doesn't seem to handle the last couple of bars of this very well (Sib player does better), lots of breaking up:

does the same for me, i tested it with each instrument individually and is fine, it appears to be a limit to how much can be played at one time. when i select 2/3rds of it i get the problem

Yep, that's an improvement, although it's still not stutter-free. Mind you, it's very rare that I'd need that amount of tremolo!

Re: NotePerformer 1.3.0 Update

I can confirm it stutters a bit here as well. But under the extreme circumstances of this score I would have to categorize this as normal behavior, as this is the worst offending score of all time from the eyes of NotePerformer. :)

All those tremolo voices in the strings take a lot of CPU, but what brings it over the top is the pipe organ! There are eight written notes on the organ using the full stops program. And the the full stops program in turn triggers eight different "pipes" in NotePerformer for each written note.

So in all there are 64 virtual pipes sounding at the same time, each simulated separately, having its own atmospheric pitch fluctuations, envelopes, etc. Which is quite extreme to begin with, and this is combined with a large scale orchestra playing playing tremolo in block chords. Knowing the kind of strain this score and NotePerformer puts on your computer in terms of calculations, I almost felt I had to duck when pressing play!

Turn off the pipe organ and the score plays back perfectly for me at least. It would of course be an option to pre-render a full stops organ patch in NotePerformer at the expense of playback quality and some RAM memory. But it was designed this way to keep the door open to the possibility of creating your own registrations with the pipe organ in the future. Plus I like "living" instruments where repeated notes don't sound exactly the same.

..and on a separate topic to my previous post, while I'm at it I'd like to throw in some tips on how to deal with a score like this one with NotePerformer, since Stephen graciously made this .sib file publicly available for download in this thread.

1. You may notice that the snare drum level changes from bar to bar. This is due to "Espressivo" in Sibelius. Set that to "Meccanico", in the Performance window, and that's taken care of.

2. Double-click all volume sliders in the mixer, to reset all volumes. That's usually a very good starting point, and if you then want to move an instrument further back in the room you can either lower the volume or increase the reverb on that instrument (using the reverb slider for that staff in the mixer).

3. The "zu 2", or "a 2" doesn't do anything in Sibelius as for now, so if you want all four trumpets playing in unison at the beginning, filter out all single notes on the trumpet staves (I use filter "Top note or single notes", and then "2nd note or single notes", that gives only single notes and no chords) and press "1" on your keyboard to double those notes.

4. From the mixer, locate the organ staves. For the bass staff, change instrument manually to "Pedal - Octave 8'" under NotePerformer->Keyboard->Organ. For the treble staff you can choose to change to "Great - Principal 8'" if you want to save some CPU at the end of the score.

5. In this particular score, Strauss calls for a "Grosse Trommel" = big drum. I suspect at some point, the bass drum became a snare drum with this .sib file, so triple-click the snare staff and change it to a bass drum staff instead.

After these steps, Stephen's attached score should sound something like this:

http://www.noteperformer.com/Also%20Sprach%20Zarathustra%20(Sibelius%20Forum%20-%20NotePerformer%201.3.0).mp3

(you may need to copy-and-paste-the-link)

I hope that's helpful. :)

Fantastic, Arne, thanks for that. As it happens, I just dug that file out to test as it was at the top of the list in the folder, it's not something I need to sound correct (or, in fact, at all), but it's thrown up some useful pointers from your good self; and indeed, I'm proud to be the source of "the worst offending score of all time from the eyes of NotePerformer" award! Any challengers for the title? Bring it on!

On my new mac as per below this plays back perfectly as posted. Shows that it's not note performer but about processor cycles. Note performer is great and I'm loving the new theramin instruments. Also love that if I don't want to use multi sound sets i don't have to now as np performs singers now.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

I love that you recognized the theremin Philip, if I may say so that instrument turned out amazingly well. I recommend anyone to try it out if they haven't already. :)

@Nick: As you know we've corresponded over email, I hope it works out with your score. Since the score loaded and played fine on all systems I tried over here I'm sort of at a dead end unfortunately, so I would recommend sending Sam the files as well unless you manage to work it out yourself, as he's the real expert on Sibelius.

I've just installed Noteperformer, and haven't yet had a chance to assess it properly. It's great that it recognises certain percussion instruments straight away, such as sleigh bells, which SoundsEssential seemed to have difficulty with (though it didn't seem to recognise 'without snares' on a side-drum part!) The other instruments are variable in sound quality, but one thing that surprised me is the disjointedness of melodic lines in most instruments, but particularly woodwind. I could only overcome this by adding the word 'legato' into each part. Is there any way of getting legato as the default style in playback? I couldn't see any reference to t his in the online manual.

Let me know if you email answer wasn't sufficient Gordon. If you want legato with NotePerformer, you must notate it legato, i.e. with slurs.

I'd also like to take a moment to say that there's a maintenance update of NotePerformer available, version 1.3.1. This is mainly bugfixes, but for the full story, please visit:

Enjoy! :)

Can I also say I really like your presence on this forum Arne.

I think i know your reasons but every time there is an update it leads to really big downloads I have a reasonably fast connection but I wonder if it might annoy some people, with slower connections. I guess it saves having to host a number of files, but a lot of programs use progressive file downloads to decrease future file sizes.

Just an opinion not a complaint.

I had noticed some noise in one of my files, i will be very interested to see if this is fixed with the latest updates. will let you know

Edit.. the noise is gone with the update, sibelius 7.5 crashed the first time i ran without the update, but second time it was fine.

I'm afraid there's no way to do incremental updates when you use software watermarking instead of copy protection. All installers are unique, for each user. In many regards, watermarking is super-convenient and user-friendly, but not when it comes to downloading updates unfortunately.

I'd like to add though that if anyone is having problems downloading our software, there's a beta script on the server which allows using download managers & resuming downloads. It's still in beta, but you can use that one by replacing the "DownloadFile.php" against "DownloadFileResume.php" in your personal download links. anyone experiencing problems and who need help with that, please send a support email from the NotePerformer website!

I can attest that the resumable download process works well. And I assume that the more people that use it, the sooner it will move from beta to production. So use it! :-)

But I also must say that for those of us with slow internet connections, a resumable download doesn't eliminate the problem of the download eating limited bandwidth for a long time. Yes, we can now kill the download and restart it at a more convenient time, but the total time is still the same: long.

Also, I might have forgot to mention it but back in June 2014, Wallander updated NotePerformer was updated to 1.3.3.

Here's the latest information about it:

Improvements in balance, dynamics and sound for section strings.
Improved memory management with considerably lower virtual memory use, solving problems with NotePerformer not working on some 32-bit PC machines.
Fixed issue with accents and marcato having become almost inaudible on some instruments.
Guitar pizzicato now works again.
Legato+harmonics for strings should now work.
On Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit versions now share the same sound and data files, reducing the PC download size by almost 50%.
Sample artifacts in section string samples have been corrected.
Improved harp harmonics sound, for the lower strings in particular.

http://www.noteperformer.com/?mode=news

Hope this helps. I'm sure there will probably be further updates later this year. Any thoughts?

Yes, I have the 1.3.3 update also & testing the audio sample (R Strauss) I found my own playback to be just about perfect with no adjustments as my own RAM is now 16 gig (new system last year). I reckon Note Performer to be almost comparable to EWQL by now, (I didn`t need to adjust any settings for the Strauss playback).

I will advise to be very careful when looking for a new music computer. I had a montrous experience with going to a company I didn`t know, but had a wonderful web site!!!. It took them 6 months to build, with constant calls to ask what was happening. I`m all fixed up now, but I was given a poor DVD drive and had to purchase another. I was given an illegal copy of Windows 7 after initially asking for 7 AND the disc. My disc was only sent a month after the main delivery. My own technician is a Windows agent and he fixed everything for me at the going rate. My technician could have taken me to `task`, and I could/should have taken legal means to bring my builder to `task` to recover my addition spending, but I just didn`t have any more energy left (at my age) to go down another possible 6 months of stress. I`m now happy with what I`ve got.
