Sib. 7.5: Sound problems
Posted by Tim Berens - 04 Apr 02:42AM
I've been using Sibelius since 2000, first working with version 3.0. Just installed 7.5, an upgrade from version 6. Version 6 worked fine. Sib 7.5 is not working.

Get no playback on the sample files included with version 7.5, and in addition version 7.5 crashes when opening a score I created from version 6.

Upon starting Sibelius, the opening music theme plays.

When I open a sample score and press P, the green playback bar moves, but there is no sound. The mixer window appears -- the mixer thinks it is creating sound (blinking lights for each channel) but no sound comes out. The configuration is set for "Sibelius 7 Sounds (jazz)" All sound sample DVDs have been installed. If I choose "General MIDI (basic)", it plays back with bad sounds, but no other configuration creates sound.

Would like to first get playback of sample scores to work, then worry about crashing on earlier scores.

Equipment: Dell Studio XPS 435 T. 8 GB RAM. 64 bit Windows 7. M-Audio Delta 1010 LT sound card installed.

This system works well with various sound software like Reaper.

Is there a configuration step(s) in addition to the installation of the DVDs that must be taken?

Any suggestions about how to get playback to work on a sample score? (I'll worry about crashing on opening my version 6 scores later.)

Thanks for your help.

When you installed the sound library from the DVD's, did you use all FOUR disks?

What is the size in GB of your Sib 7.5 Sound library?

Thanks Bob

Bob:

Thanks for your reply. I installed all four disks.

Where is the Sib 7.5 library stored on a windows machine?

Thanks,

Tim

Yes, but did you install **Sounds** from all four disks? On the first disk, there is a Sibelius 7.5 application installer, and a Sibelius 7 Sounds installer. Did you run both from the first disk?

> Where is the Sib 7.5 library stored on a windows machine?

The Sibelius 7.5 Sounds library is installed at the location you chose during the sounds installation process.

If you cannot remember where you chose to put the sound library, you can look up the current location in the Windows registry at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\ContentPath

If you accepted the default location, then, on 64-bit Windows, the Sibelius 7 Sounds library is installed at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\

If you open the Properties panel for the "Sibelius 7 Sounds" folder at the end of the path given above, then, for the 7.5 version, the size of the contents should be exactly:
36,848,526,320 bytes

If the figure is anything other than that, then the Sibelius 7 Sounds library is not completely installed.

Thanks for your reply.

I ran the sound installer on the first disk, then installed the following 3 disks, using the default installer when the disk was placed in the drive.

The folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds" has these properties:

Size: 34.3 GB (36,848,526,320 Byes)
Contains: 1,147 files, 18 folders
Attributes: Read Only

Good, that looks as if the Sibelius 7 Sounds library is installed correctly onto hard disk.

Please attach a screen-shot of the "Audio Engine Options" dialogue window of Sibelius.

I don't have screen shot software. Here are the options:

Use virtual instruments and effects box is checked.

Audio Interface
Interface: Line 3/4 (M-Audio Delta 1010LT) (DS)
Outputs: 1/2 ASIO Setup
Buffer size: 4096 samples
Sample rate: 44100 Hz
Latency: 92.88 ms

Screen-shot support is built in to Windows. It is called "Snipping Tool"

> Interface: Line 3/4 (M-Audio Delta 1010LT) (DS)

This suggests that the audio will be sent to lines 3 and 4 of the Delta card. Which lines are your speakers connected to? Maybe you should try lines 1/2.

That did it. Thank you very much.

Are you close enough to Ohio that I could buy you a beer to say thanks in person?

I'm guessing you would know this too: I am hearing a great deal of breakup of the sound during playback of a large orchestral score. Is there an article that discusses methods of optimizing screen displays and the like to minimize this distortion?

Thank you again.

I'm only 3,830 miles away, but it's still a good idea!

General principles:

- try to use an audio output device with an ASIO interface (rather than the "(DS)" interface you quoted above);

- avoid running other applications or processes on the PC which might take processor time away from Sibelius, even if they are in the background;

- especially avoid having "Task Manager" running, because it runs at High Priority;

- if the distortion sounds like drop-outs, increase the "Buffer Size" in "Audio Engine Options", so as to give more headroom for Sibelius to fill the buffer while the output device empties it;

- if the distortion sounds like overload, use the Mixer to lower the level of all individual channels slightly (an orchestra has a lot of instrument sounds adding together, and they might together overload the output device when singly they sound fine);

- use playback configuration "Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite)" instead of "Sibelius 7 Sounds".
