Sib. 7.5: Strange playback dictionary bug?
Posted by Michael Kilpatrick - 01 Apr 10:35PM
I'm working on my transcription of Duke Elligton's "Goin Up" which has a trombone cadenza in the middle. I've entered that and I'm trying to put a couple of breath marks along with the pauses to illustrate the phrasing properly.

However, I've discovered a weird bug. When I add a breath mark and then go back to the beginning of the cadenza to play it all back, Sibelius plays all of notes in that trombone part as staccato! All the notes well *before* the breath mark. If I remove the breath mark again, it plays back normally with the notes at full duration.

It took me a long time to realise that it was the breath marks that was doing this.

I then realised that symbols such as the Comma exist in the playback dictionary. I changed the effect to "until start of next note" in the hope this might work, but it didn't. I had to set it to "no playback effect".

This is surely a bug? A symbol such as a Comma appearing in a staff should not affect the playback of all the notes preceding it, right from the beginning of the score, should it?

Michael
