Avid Store: Pando Media Booster no longer required?
Posted by Robin Walker - 29 Mar 04:40PM
There seems to have been a change in the Avid Store for downloadable products. They no longer download Pando Media Booster (formerly used for large products), which then downloads the product itself.

Now, a link gives (an apparently) direct link for the download (which in the case of large downloads, is ZIP-compressed).

In fact, the link is for an item in the Akamai content distribution network. If your ISP is signed up to this system, then the download is fetched from a physical location which is "close to you" in internet terms.

Hi Robin-

Sorry I cant help with your question--its seems like a Sam kind of question:)

While researching your question I came across this regarding the Pando Media Booster--it was pretty shocking to me, as I had no idea..

When you install Sibelius 7 Sounds, you are shown a license agreement and other information that explains that Pando Media Booster will, by default, continue to "seed" the downloaded files for a week after your own download has completed. This is the expected behaviour. You can of course uninstall Pando Media Booster once your download has finished."

I'd like to reread that Panda Media Booster information to learn what it means to seed downloaded files, and get an idea of why upwards of 500MB needs to be uploaded each day. Is the info on my computer, or available online?"

I am shocked to discover that AVID is using my computer as a peer to peer system for their own benefit. I had no idea this was taking place, maybe their was small print if you looked for it, but something like this should be made VERY clear, and what if we disagree with this, are we then able to download the software, probably not.

Perhaps we should wait for a response from AVID, but I am disgusted at this devious trick, so that AVID don't have to buy faster servers of their own.

Maybe having this Pando thing running in the background is why Sibelius keeps crashing? I need my network bandwidth for Vienna Ensemble Pro."

The Sibelius 7 Sounds download manager uses Pando's Media Booster technology. This is a mixture of a regular content delivery network (i.e. Pando's own fast servers dotted around the world) and peer-to-peer delivery. The benefit is that once a swarm reaches a certain size, everybody's download gets faster.

Pando Media Booster will share the files it has downloaded for up to 7 days after your download completes, provided they're still available (i.e. you haven't deleted them), and then it stops. It doesn't share any other arbitrary data, or do anything at all more than 7 days after your download completes....."

Thanks Bob

Indeed, we moved over to direct download or via the Avid Download Manager earlier this year. It affects the Sibelius Sounds installers for Sibelius 7.5, Sibelius 7 and Sibelius First.

I have never heard of Pando Media Booster until reading this thread. The original concept is frightening enough to me since I have very limited bandwidth; I certainly don't have enough to be acting as a download server for others (if I understand what this is about). But now, according to Wikipedia:

"Pando shut down its servers and ceased business on August 31, 2013. As of February 24, 2014 the Pando Media Booster has been hijacked and unsuspecting persons who install a prompted update have their internet browsers hijacked and a virus called the "Sweet Page" browser virus is installed on their machine".

I have no idea if that is accurate, but it is certainly frightening.
