Sib. 7.5: Has anyone found the Timeline of any real use?
Posted by Andy Horrell - 07 Mar 08:06PM
I've been using the demo of 7.5 for a while now, and I just don't find the Timeline of any practical use, it just takes up too much of the screen.

I also keep wanting to click in it's window to drag the highlighted zone (which it does not do).

So just in case I am missing something here, is anyone finding the Timeline useful - or just a burden on screen space?

I am really trying to like 7v5, but I'm struggling to find anything useful..

I will confess that I haven't tried 7.5, but if they really have fixed the long-standing bug that makes pasting triplets impossible in many cases, I would find that extremely useful.

I find it VERY useful and have it on a separate monitor fully expanded. It's the only feature I would have interest in in 7.5 -s an expensive upgrade for effectively one feature.

My feeling is that unless the new playback specific features are of interest, there will not be a huge reason for 7.1.3 users to upgrade to 7.5.

I do think it is important that Avid showed that they could put a version out, even a limited one.

Hi,

I'm still experimenting with the possibilities. But I think the best thing about the timeline is how the New text style 'Musical Structure' integrates with it.

Before you dismiss the timeline, I'd say take a close look at how you can define your own terms for this text style within the Words Menu (via... >File >Preferences >Word Menus >Musical Structure), and how they can in turn show up as Labels on the timeline, So long as you've turned them ON (within... >File >Preferences >Timeline... and check Show 'Other Text' box).

I see this as a great way to bookmark sections of a score to quickly identify their location from a wide overview. Plus it allows me to tag sections in a similar fashion that I can with another program I often use along with Sibelius called Transcribe!.

Anyhow, maybe I'm overly excited about this, but I see it as a good feature, which has gotten very poor attention so far. It's certainly worthy of being mentioned as one of the big benefits of the timeline in AVID's promotional efforts for 7.5. But so far I've only seen it mentioned within the 'What's New' pdf (page 17,... >File >Help >What's New).

I absolutely agree with you about the desire to navigate around the timeline, via click/drag, or arrow keys. I think that they ARE considering this as an option for the future, so we'll see what happens.

Take Care,

Jim

Thanks for that info Jim,
I was using tempo text and found it handy to state what jazz soloist was playing and when backgrounds were added. Being able to jump from one point to another is great for the workflow.

I use it as a Tempo-Text as a jumpmark. Easy to remove when finished and much better than using the navigator.

OK, the Musical Structure text style on the timeline is looking useful. Having assigned a shortcut key to it, that's now quick to use.

I now have the timeline panel on my second screen, it is now useful without taking over the main screen.

What would be good, if when clicking on the timeline, rather than just the screen moving and highlighting the selected location, that it also placed the play locator there as well, ready to play the score from that position.

It's a shame that there is no manual for 7.5, I am sure there are things in 7.5 that no one knows about because nobody has told anyone about it.

The play when click idea on timeline could have some practical usage but not across the board IMO. Sometimes it is handy for different levels of editing. I like to do a different 'pass' for say checking dynamics - then mutes (in and out) etc I wouldn't always war it playing back.
