Sib. 6.x: Changing tuplets to triple meter
Posted by Peter Castine - 21 Jan 06:27PM (edited 21 Jan 06:31PM)
I started working on a piece with it in 4/4 and ending up with lots of sextuplets and triplets. In fact, nothing but sextuplets and triplets. It would probably make more sense to write this in 12/8 using quavers and semiquavers (i.e., without tuplets all over the place).

I've looked at the Tuplet plug-ins hoping to find something that might save me having to re-enter the music from scratch (I've got a couple of pages now).

Is there any automatic or semi-automatic way to do this?

I've attached a "before" screen shot and will add an "after" screen shot (of what I'd like to have) by way of clarification.

Thanks

PS: Yes, I left out the piano part in the "after" shot. The "after" is just a quick mock-up to (hopefully) make it clear what the transformation is that I'm after.

Try the plugin Plugins > Notes and Rests > Convert Simple Time to Compound Time, which I think will do just what you want."

Use the plugin "Convert Simple Time to Compound Time". It's in the Notes and Rests folder."

Thanks Bob

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the pointer. For whatever reason, "Notes and Rests" was not the place I was looking.

The Convert Simple Time plugin has, however, serious limitations with my example: it doesn't handle the sextuplets at all, just adding text to the newly created 12/8 bars saying stuff like "couldn't convert four tuplets." I tried converting the sextuplets to triplets (still with semiquavers) but the result is similarly unusable. Never mind that Tuplet Ratio will only handle one tuplet at a time, making the process mind-numbingly tedious.-(

I may still try pre-processing with Double Note Values and Split Tuplets to see if that makes Convert Simple Time happier, but I'm not overly confident. It might be more to the point to write my own plug-in, but that's always a last resort.

You're welcome Peter--sorry it didn't work out.

Thanks Bob

In case anyone stumbles across this thread looking for a solution, the following worked (hope I haven't left anything out; you may need to salt to taste). The trick was that the semiquaver sextuplets (see the .PNG from my original post) didn't play nice with the Convert Common Time plugin. So…

Step 0) Make a backup copy of the original score.

1) Select All, Transformations->Double Note Values (creates new score)

2) Split all quaver sextuplets into pairs of quaver triplets. This is made somewhat less tedious with these two sub-steps:
  a) Define a shortcut key for the Tuplets->Split or Join Tuplets plugin,
  b) The tuplet won't run over multiple selections made with shift-click, but it *will* run with multiple selections made by cmd-click (presumably ctrl-click on Windows).

3) Change the time signature from 4/2 to 4/4 (just use the Create Time Signature command for this; that will split each measure in two).

4) Select All, Notes and Rests->Convert Simple Time to Compound Time. This appends bars in 12/8 after the original selection.

5) Select the 12/8 bars, Transformations->Halve Note Values. Creates another new score.

At this stage the rhythm's correct, but you've lost system objects (and I managed to lose staff objects, too). Either copy these over from the original score, OR insert a few empty bars at the beginning of the original score, set the time signature, copy/paste the corrected music in, then copy all your texts, expressions, slurs, hairpins, etc. over to the "corrected" music. I did this only a few bars at a time to avoid making mistakes.

Not as slick as I had hoped, but better than having to copy out 8 pages of score.

PS: Just noticed that one of the transformations did some enharmonic "simplification." Not nice :-( Be aware of this.

Greetings All,

This is an old thread, but hopefully someone can help me. I am trying to use the the plugin Plugins > Notes and Rests > Convert Simple Time to Compound Time, to convert sixteenth note triplets in 4/4 to sixteenth notes in 12/8. It is not cooperating though - none of these tuplets are rendering.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Joshua Stamper
