Sib. 7.1.3: Col legno/arco playback
Posted by Josephal - 29 May 12:35AM
I tried searching for a thread for my particular problem with no success . . .

I'm having a playback problem with a string passage; after playing col legno for 1 measure the playback ignores the input "arco" and continues interpreting everything as "col legno."

Any tips on how to get the playback to follow the input text?

Thanks.

Have you gone into the Playback Dictionary, and checked the settings for these words?

If arco is set to... 'Sound ID:[ -pizzicato ]', does changing this (or adding in) '-col lengo' fix playback?

I'd start by making sure there's agreement in the playback dictionary. Even look at the Word Properties. maybe a case sensitive setting(?), ect...

---

I'm not sure I don't use this area of Sibelius very much. But I know it's sensitive to scanning all words/text in the score, and trying to interpret a meaningful playback - even words not intended to be used in this fashion.

Can you attach an example of your score if this doesn't help?

Take Care,

Jim Druckenmiller

Even the addition of text such as "Do not slow down" can cause a sudden dramatic drop in tempo unless "Play on Pass" is deactivated for the text.

Jim,

It worked; I went to Playback Dict. and added -col legno and the playback interpreted the correct input sequence: arco, col legno, arco.

Thanks!

It sounds as if you have selected the wrong soundset/Housestyle. The correct soundset should have all these Playback Dictionary definitions ready to use if used with the correct template.

Derek,

You'll have to forgive my ignorance; how does one choose the wrong soundset/Housestyle? Or, rather how does one know how to choose the right one?

That depends which sound library you are using, which you haven't told us.

There are times you have to use "norm" or "ord" after an articulation before you can use and hear a new one. This is the case with XCE (Xsample Chamber Ensemble)

Bob,

Could you walk me through the steps on how to do this? I'm a newbie with Sib. 7.
