Sibelius won't start. I'm getting the following error message:
Error initializing the licensing engine. This often happens if you have migrated data from another computer. Please delete the following folder, then restart to Sibelius 7: C:\ProgramData\Avid\Licensing\Sibelius.
I think I've done this but it didn't work. Unsure because on my computer, with Windows 7 Home 64 bit, there's nothing that exactly matches this description. I went to C:\Program Files (x86) or just Program Files\Avid\Sibelius\Licenses and deleted that folder and nothing happened. Not sure what to do here at all. My Support Code just expired a couple weeks ago and I didn't use it once, now this happens. Please Help.
You've deleted the incorrect folder, and so you might now have to re-install to restore the things that were deleted in error.
The folder to delete is PRECISELY the one in the message, but in Windows the C:\ProgramData\ folder is hidden by default. So the first thing to do is to use control panel Folder Options to show hidden folders, then you can find C:\ProgramData\ and the folders beneath it.

I am having the same problem with the same message.Sibelius will not open. I am running Sibelius 7.1.3 on Mac OS X Lion 10.7. Have had no problem until about a week ago. I have found the Library, Application Support & Avid folders, but there is no Folder for Licence within Avid- just 3 folders: Common, Graphic Files and Sibelius 7. Please help
Thanks Pam
There was an error initialising the license engine...
Tried the folder delete method on my mac pro to no success.
I've also tried deleting and reinstalling Sibelius from the CD-ROM and have the same error message.
As noted in replies above, you are possibly deleting the wrong folder. Please confirm whether you were looking in the System Library or in the User Library for /Library/Application Support/Avid/
Re-installing will not help with this issue.

That's the wrong folder to have deleted.
You have deleted all the Sibelius settings and options in your account.
The folder to delete is precisely the one given in the error message, in the System Library, not the User Library. You should delete ONLY the folder "Sibelius", found at the end of the path:
Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Avid/Licenses/
Do not delete anything else but that particular folder "Sibelius". Do not use search or Spotlight to locate that folder: use only the path shown above.
I systematically tried all the options given here prior to deleting that. One step at a time. I then tried launching Sibelius and activating. Nothing has worked. I spent the better part of the afternoon going through each option as given here to the nth degree being careful to follow the instructions to the letter. It ain't happening and apparently, based on the other postings, I'm not the only one. ;)
I had already previously searched and followed the instructions in your link as follows:
Quit Sibelius completely
In Finder, go to /Library/Application Support/Avid/Licenses
Delete the Sibelius folder
Now try starting Sibelius again, and you should now be able to activate
If you find that you're still experiencing problems, please try repairing disk permissions as described here
Please note that on Mac OS Lion, the Library folder is hidden by default. We have provided instructions on accessing the Library folder here.
I had already tried that. Tried it again according to your instructions... same result:
"There was an unspecified error (5) initialising the licensing engine"
Btw... the other fix I tried, deleting the Avid Utilities folder and re-launching Sibelius, was done according to the direction I received from Sibelius tech support via email several months ago. The case was closed at that time because I didn't have the time to continue working on the issue. The problem originated under Maverick... and persists under Yosemite.
> "There was an unspecified error (5) initialising the licensing engine"
This is not the same as the error message that this thread is about. I have not seen this message before in relation to Sibelius. Do you have (or have you ever had) other Avid products on this Mac?
Can you recollect how the Mac got into this state in the first place? Did something happen which triggered the problem?
> the other fix I tried, deleting the Avid Utilities folder...
I hope that is a typo, and that you did not in fact delete the "Avid Utilities" folder. If you did, then a full re-installation of Sibelius will be required.
In fact, given the events so far, I would at this stage recommend a complete re-installation from the original installation media (or downloaded installers).
I don't know if this has been completely closed, but I'm having the same problems. I have tried the reinstall several times, and have used option>go>library>application support>avid>sibelius 7 delete folder and restart and have had the same message over and over. All of my permissions allow programs from anywhere and I have the newest mac os update 10.10.2 and am attempting to run sib 7.1.3
All of my problems began when my old computer crashed, I got a new one and now it always gives me the error initializing the licensing engine message.
I'm in the middle of a competition percussion season and need my program working. Please help me!
I have launched the licensing utility but get the message: There was an error initialising the licensing engine. If you have migrated data from a different machine please delete the folder: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Licenses
When I look in the library, I have never found the licenses folder, all I have is /library/application support/avid/sibelius 7
When I try opening Sibelius even after deleting and reinstalling it tells me to delete the folder: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7
I don't have the verbatim because I uninstalled it yet again and can't give you the exact. I will reinstall if you'd like the exact full message.
There was an error initializing the licensing engine. This often happens if you have migrated data from another computer. Please delete the following folder, then restart Sibelius 7: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Licenses/Sibelius.
Also, like I said before when I go into the library folder it only gives me: /Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius
You are looking in the wrong place. The message starts with a leading slash on /Library, indicating the System Library at the root of Macintosh HD. You have been looking in the User Library, which would normally be indicated in messages as ~/Library, with a leading tilde.
To open the System Library from the Finder:
- pull down the Go menu and select "Go To Folder";
- in the box, type precisely:
/Library
and click Go.
- then navigate through /Application Support/Avid/Licenses/
- inside the "Licenses" folder, delete "Sibelius".
Do not delete anything else other than that precise folder.
Now, assuming that you have updated Sibelius to version 7.1.3, launch "Avid License Control" and activate Sibelius 7.1 with your credentials.
Only after that should you try launching Sibelius.

Just migrated from one Mac to another and of course I'd no idea where to look when I received the 'There was an error........' message. Thank you so much for the clarity of your instructions. Goodness knows what I would have deleted without them.
Hi, This may sound like a dumb question, but once I go through all the steps (/library/application support/avid/licenses and sibelius comes up how do I delete it-move it to the trash? And how do I restart it?
