I just purchased Avid's 'Scorch for iPad' app. I tried to play all of the sample sheet music examples included with the app. None of them produced any audible sounds on the iPad.

I have a 'New iPad,' i.e. the iPad 3. Works perfectly. It plays my recorded music. It plays video clips with sound on the internet. It plays movies with sound on the Netflix app. But it will not play any music on the Avid Scorch app. The volume control is set at max.

I could not find any support on the Avid website for the Scorch app for iPad. So I am posting this on the Sibelius forum. Nor could I find any settings on the Scorch app that would enable sound.

So, Avid, does this app work on iPads or not?

Hi Mark,
One thing that's caught me out is having the notifications sound turned off via the little switch next to the volume control.
Notification sounds need to be on.
Don't know if that will help

Yes, you have to buy the Scorch app for the Apple iPad . At $1.99, that may not seem like much. But that represents a fortune for a music app that apparently makes absolutely no sounds. The sine qua non of any app for the iPad is that it works as soon as it is installed. Evidently, Avid's Scorch app for the iPad is not ready for prime time.

The little switch next to the volume control is used to lock in the display, vertically or horizontally. It has no discernible effect on the playing of music or sounds.

The Scorch app does not appear in the Notifications Center setting. In any case, I get notifications from my other apps. There is nothing there to enable Scorch to make musical sounds.

Apparently, Avid has plans to market sheet music via the Scorch app,, which is directly connect to Avid's music store. I predict they wont sell many songs until they get Scorch to play musical sounds.

By the way, I tried to play some of my scores on Score Exchange using Safari. No luck there, either. I get a message: Scorch is not compatible with my browser. The fact that I had already installed the Scorch app made no difference

Strange. I have an iPad 3 and Scorch plays everything.

Hi Rob:

Your post inspired me to go back into Settings and hunt some more for a solution. Eureka!

There is a settings that toggles the little side switch from controlling the display lock to controlling the volume mute. My iPad was set to controlling the display lock. I changed the setting to controlling the volume mute. Then I tried Scorch once more, and it worked.

What is bizarre is that previously, I could listen to my recorded music on the iPad, and videos with sound on the internet -- but not Scorch playing its sample songs. With the setting changes, and the switch position altered, everything worked.

There is no information about this setting and switch anywhere in the Scorch app. So who knew?

Hi mark, great that it works though I always have mine set to rotate and haven't had any problem with playback. There is an iOS scorch forum but it is on the avid site. Having said that it has been very quiet for the last 8 months and no sign of the promised bug fixes.

Still strange Mark.
My switch is set to lock display and Scorch plays no matter the position.
If the switch is changed to mute then Scorch does not play, and if set to mute Scorch does not sound.
In other words it works exactly as one would expect.

Perhaps your iPad was set on Mute mode from a previous operation, before the slider switch was altered to orientation. Thus the iPad was always on 'Mute' mode, despite where the switch was set to.

The Video and Music apps 'force' the sound out, whether or not the device is set on 'Mute' mode, as it's treated as a user's desire to have the music playing. Presumably Scorch is somehow 'wired' differently, and it obeys the iPad's mute mode, unlike other music and video apps. Perhaps this is related to its MIDI functions.

That's just a theory as to how this could have occurred.

You have to admire Apple's cheek - selling you an app that enables you to buy something!

If you check both the app reviews and the scorch iOS site, there are a lot of very unhappy customers who are experiencing problems downloading scores and being disappointed with the quality of the scores.
