Sib. First: Transcribing what you are playing on Guitar directly to notation sofware.

I have Sibelius 5 and will up grade to 7 soon. What I would really like someone to come up with is away for my guitar, through any interface,
(i.e. M-Audio MobilPre, Focusrite Scarlet series, Avid MBox, Presonus Audio Box, etc.)and have the notes come up on the staff and tabs of Sibelius Notation Software, or any notation software for that matter.
With out needing to run the Guitar through an expensive Midi processing hardware unit. ANY ONE HAVE THE ANSWER FOR THAT?

GStephen

Hi

The cheap option is to use audio score lite which is bundled with Sib 7. However, forget anything that is not monophonic!

The only two options i've found that really work are midi guitar p/up with midi convertor or celemony's melodyne plugin for your DAW. A friend has melodyne in his studio and it did a very good job, but either way you end up with a midi file which will need some editing.

Maybe someone else has a better suggestion...i'll be following because it's something i'm particularly interested in.

Good luck

Jason

I've been trying to do this reliably and even close to accurately for years... as of yet I have not been successful.

There are so many nuances in guitar playing that cannot be conveyed with MIDI so give up on that.

I've tried audio score lite and bought the full version as well. Neither of which did a very good job and the time it took me to fix what they did was more than the time to start from scratch.

For really simple stuff, you might be okay. But for actually playing something solid and having the computer figure it out... it still looks pretty bleak out there.

There are midi guitars which work in the same way as midi keyboards, allowing you to 'write' to Sibelius staves directly. Not sure how well that works in practice, I've never tried it, even entering midi notes from a keyboard results in somewhat less than stellar results (but then again I'm a poor keyboard player).

For me it'd probably be easier just to take my guitar and play it, and then transcribe into Sibelius using the qwery keyboard and the number pad, to get a civic looking result.

I'm afraid this is never going to work very well. By all means experiment with anything you can get for free!

There's one new software which does work very good for using your E-guitar as polyphonic instrument:
http://www.jamorigin.com/midi-guitar/vst.html

Now you can test the free beta (after that it will cost 99$)
I've tested it with Reaper and it's really nice and works! With Reaper you can split the midi into 2 channels so you can play e.g. bass on the 3 low strings and flute on the 3 high strings in first position.
BUT: All the former posters are absolutely right. Even if it works good for live playing or recording midi it is still a long long way to get the midi to notation. Guitar notation is still very complex in itself concerning voices and for example even if you split the midi at some point it will never be right for the whole piece. The work to correct the midi takes so much time that you would have finished 3 pieces by just writing them from scratch in Sibelius.
For transcribing single line melodies (also with chords) the software above works pretty good and fast.
