Sib. 7.1: Very interesting news
Posted by Tony Cliff - 09 Nov 11:36AM
Just received this fascinating email which sheds more light on the loss of the London office team and also tells us where Daniel will be employed:

New Steinberg Research & Development office in London for professional music notation and education software

HAMBURG, Germany — November 9, 2012 — Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH announced today that it is establishing an R&D center in London, United Kingdom, to focus on developing software for the music notation and education markets.

Marketing director at Steinberg, Frank Simmerlein, comments: “Steinberg has a good standing in both the education and composing markets, but we’ve always believed that these markets and its customers deserve the best support we can give. Therefore we are more than delighted to have found the perfect team of extremely talented and experienced individuals to make this possible in the foreseeable future.”

Ben Timms, head of Steinberg’s new London-based R&D team, remarks: “I’m delighted and proud that we are becoming part of the Steinberg family. Our collective expertise combined with Steinberg’s world-leading products and technologies can only mean exciting things for the customers.”

“As musicians, we are very excited to be joining Steinberg, a company whose unrivaled tradition of ground-breaking technologies we have always admired. As a development team, we are looking forward to bringing our extensive experience to bear on a new generation of products, designed by musicians for musicians,” adds Daniel Spreadbury, new product marketing manager for Steinberg.

The London-based office begins its operation in the middle of November this year.

I guess it's the old team under a new name. It sounds very exciting, but I wonder were it will leave Sibelius. It certainly highlights Avid's total stupidity and I guess it will serve them right if this pulls the rug from under their feet!

Cubase 6.5's notation editor is a great deal more complex than previous versions, they have been going in the direction of developing it into a sophisticated composition tool. With the addition of Daniel's team, it would seem to have great possibilities.

Sounds promising! The best part is that Daniel has landed on his feet, and is off to other (and possibly greener) pastures.

Let's hope that whatever program develops, it has the capability of importing Sib files. I have a feeling that in a few years we may be needing that...

Yes, but how long is it going to take Steinberg to get a new product off the ground?

And where does that leave Sibelius users if its future turns out to have been ruined by an Avid unable to find the expertise to take it further, and a competing product that eats into the market share in a couple of years' time?

Admittedly this could be three or four years down the line, but one outcome could be that Sibelius becomes something which ultimately has to be replaced by a new product - with a brand new licence at full price because there will be little incentive for Steinberg to offer crossgrade discounts if Sibelius is no longer under development as a competing product and has a slowly dwindling user base.

It can be tricky when somebody company-hops within the same industry. I've been looking at the list of patents with Daniel listed as co-inventor, but Avid as assignees.

I suspect that the file format is legally protected and I can't see Avid agreeing to licence it to Steinberg. I reckon that only if Avid goes under will the Sibelius file format become up for grabs.

Michael, Derek--

It would be pointless to write an import filter for Sibelius files--there are legal issues (particularly because the people writing the import routines would likely be former Avid employees), but more importantly there is MusicXML.

If you're not on Sib 7, upgrade--from Sib 7 you can export your score into MusicXML, which makes your score readable by anybody: Finale, Notion, etc. If you want to stick with Sib 6, get Dolet. Either way, the way forward for Sibelius users will be considerably safer if you have the ability to convert your scores to MusicXML.

Yes, looking at this it again it seems that Steinberg might develop new software, presumably closely integrated with Cubase. Personally, I'm glad that Daniel and team have fallen on their feet after their appalling treatment by Avid, and that I don't depend on Sibelius to make a living.

Interesting times ahead, particularly if the promised investment in developing Finale materialises. Two notation programmes vs a Pro Tools film scoring plugin.

For a pro engraver (making pro editions) there is hours to be spent fixing all the things MusicXML mess up. For 'home' publishers it might be good.

New software - Have anyone seen any contenders to Word or InDesign lately?

But, competition is never bad. It is welcome.

Yes, we should all be aware of MusicXML. It will transfer your music to another program. It won't quite transfer your scores, as anyone who uses it will testify.

Oh, the irony. Yamaha bought Steinberg from Pinnacle Systems back in 2005. And guess who then bought the rest of Punnacle? Avid.

But given the Steinberg press release's comments about "education and composing markets" (not "music engraving"), I'm not going to hold my breath for a couple of years while they figure out how to write a Sibelius-style score viewer (with no real editing capability outside of the sequencer) as a VST plugin.

I'm very excited about that since I can still use Sibelius 7 until this new product is truly up to snuff. Which will take a while. The head of that new R&D dept. used to be the head of engineering for Sibelius. This is very positive. A new player in this field is probably a good thing, especially coming from that team. It promises to be original.

To start with a clean slate and the proper resources is every software developer's dream (I was only once in that position, albeit on a much smaller project), and as Claude says we can afford to wait. Sibelius 7 should be good for for a year or so, and we don't have to give any money to Avid in the meantime. I certainly intend to be an early adopter of the new software though.

From the entries in this thread it seems that Avid can expect a mass exodus as users jump ship to the new software when it appears. Perhaps Avid could sell Sibelius to Steinberg, not so much for Steinberg to continue developing Sibelius, but to make the Sibelius files readable by the new software. This would ensure a huge migration.

Selling Sibelius to Steinberg, especially if the support team could move over to SB, would be a great option and would indeed Save Sibelius. But then it's intriguing to see what Daniel & team will come up with, and at least the spirit of e Finn's Sibelius will now live on.
