Sib. 7.0: Wrwong notes on playback
Posted by LoNoteMusic - 15 Aug 05:38PM
Here's an odd one...

I opened a new Brass Quintet score, and entered 9 notes on the Trumpet 1 part - Doh-Soh-Doh in quavers. I used QWERTY input for these (select note value and type the notename).
I then copied and pasted the resulting two bars onto the other 4 parts, and moved the Trombone and Horn parts one octave down, and the Tuba part 2 pctaves down, to keep everything in a sensible register.

I should hear a unison (in octaves) scale going up to Soh and back to Doh.

Not So.

I hear dissonance. Lots of it.

I click on the first note of the Trumpet part (G), and it plays an Ab for a millisecond before playing the G. THis also happens in the other Trumpet and Horn parts. I play it again, and it plays fine.

I change playback configuration from General MIDI (Enhanced) to Sibelius 6 Essentials - Dissonance. I change back - Dissonance. I try a custom configuration - dissonance.

I try this same exercise in Sibelius 6 - Same results.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I read in here a thread from months ago where Daniel said there was a bug in the Trumpet patch, but this also happens in teh Horn part, and when I opened a different score, it was endemic there too - Futes, Oboes, Brass.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Martin

Can you attach the score here, together with details of which playback device you're using?

Hi Daniel,

Here it is.

I've tried it with General Midi (enhanced), Sibelius 6 Essentials and Sibelius 7 Sounds, as well as a custom configuration I have to use my JV1010. I've also tried it in Sibelius 6 and Sibelius 7 - same result every time, which makes me think its a hardware issue, rather than anything actually to do with Sibelius. I've re-booted Sibelius, the PC and returned the JV1010 to factory settings, but it still applies. I've also played with pretty much all of the Audio Engine Options.

Incidentally, I just opened an old wind band score that used to play fine, and it is doing the same thing.

Odd...
Attachment wrong playback.sib (38K)

The score plays fine here. The problem must be at your end, particularly if other scores show the same effect.

Is there anything on your computer that might be grabbing the audio system and resetting it to 48KHz sample rate, then Sibelius drags it back to 44.1Khz?

Not that I'm seeing, Laurence, although I do have a lot of audio and video stuff on here. Robin, after trying loads of different permutations for most of the afternoon, I'm inclined to agree with you, but the problem is I have no idea where to start looking, that I haven't already tried!

As an update, it seems to be happening with all my scores, which confirms that it is something that has changed with my setup that I'm not aware of. The only thing that has changed recently (ie, since the last time my scores played back OK), is that I have been having major problems with McAfee anti-virus, and after a fairly mammoth remote control session with their support guy this morning, he said that whetever my problem was is a known issue, and he uninstaled McAfee and installed Microsoft Security Essentials until such times as mcAfee find a solution, at which point he promised to come back and fix it. Other than that, I haven't made any hardware or software changes for ages.

Another update - I made the score into a scorch webpage, and it plays back fine with any of the playback devices listed. Dont know if that's relevant, but it's an observation.

McAfee is a well-known trouble-maker. I'd say you're well rid of it. Save your money! But I can't see it causing this problem.

A semitone pull-back does rather shout 48/44.1 though, doesn't it?

I made a video of the issue to let you see it in action. It's at http://youtu.be/0LPDLGfYr6Y, but please reply here, rather than on YouTube.

Laurence, any suggestions as to what could be causing that, or where to look?

Many thanks.

Score plays back correctly for me and I can hear audio on your youtube video.

I know you say it affects previous scores as well. Do they play correctly if you try them first at start up? -i.e. not after playing your problem score. I had this problem once and solved it by creating new stave(s) and deleting problem stave(s).

Only my experience so probably another cause as suggested by others.

Hi Roy - yep all scores I have are now displaying the problem. So it's obviously a system problem, rather than a Sibelius problem (I believe).

I'm not sure what you mean - replacing the staves on the problem score fixed it for that score only, or for all scores?

Yes, it fixed it for all scores. I think it was Sib 6.
Is it different staves that playback wrongly in a random way or always the same staves/instruments?

Re: Sib. 7.0: Wrwong notes on playback

It's not an individual patch or bunch of patches, as it happens in a string orchestra score and a Brass Quintet score, and a full ochestra with choir score (on the vocal parts).

If I click the first note in each part, then leave the first note highlighted while I play the score, it plays back OK the first time, but not if I just hit P again. Its as if the software needs to re-set the pitch of the patch before it plays it, each time it plays it. Odd.

BTW, I checked the Audio Engine Options, and all playback devices are set at 44.1 Khz. I had been messing around in there try to reduce latency with different keyboard/audio device/sound configuration combinations, but as far as I can tell, everything is back to where it was before this problem arose.

What were your samples recorded at? I think that the later 24-bit samples are 48 KHz.

Just wanted to report back on this issue. I mentioned that I was having issues with McAfee. After a 3.5 -hour session with their tech support chappie, they finally uninstalled and re-installed it completely. While that didn't exactly solve the McAfee problem, somehow or other it DID solve the Sibelius problem! I asked the guy if there was any known issue with McAfee and music software and he said no, so I am none the wiser as to the cause - only very happy that the problem has gone! :)

In general, it is a good idea to configure any anti-virus or anti-malware application to exclude real-time scanning of the Sibelius process (sibelius.exe). The instructions for setting up application exclusions vary according to the AV product in question. I also configure anti-virus products not to look at any of the files in a sample library.
