Sib. 7.1: Opinions please
Posted by Jason Ward - 10 Aug 04:28PM
Dear learned users,

I am an instrumental teacher of all styles of guitar and therefore create many pieces and work sheets.

I'd like to be able to create the same piece of music but with instructional text on one one version, say tab (yuk!) on another version etc all within one file.

Up until now i have been using 'versions' but am starting to forget what i have created and when! I sometimes use 'Focus on staves' Recently i have also considered 'breaks' to create 'movements' of the same piece.

I'd love to know if anyone has a better way they would be kind enough to share.

Kindest,

Jason

One idea that may work is to create as score with two identical instruments, enter the music onto the first one then, when all is entered copy all into the second instrument. Having done that, put the tabs on one of the instruments and put the instructional text on the other one. You could then print out the "parts" as two differing scores, one with tabs and the other with the instructional text. When you look at the original score you would then see both of your "orig. versions" at the same time, one above the other and be able to compare them if needed.

A second thought, probably much easier is to put all the instructional text and the other "tabs" text ALL into the one score but make sure they are in DIFFERENT text styles.
After inputting select all the instructional text

Home > select > advanced filter > then click on view text and find text, choose the appropriate style > select.
Then either show in score OR show in parts.

Repeat for the other type of text and show in parts or score (whichever was not chosen before)

You will end up with two items, the Score which will show all of one sort of text and the "Part" which will show the other.

If you have view hidden objects selected you should see all the text items in the score.

I think Richard has the right idea, or at least a Very Good One. . . Let your main Sibelius score contain everything, and then create customized parts to include whatever you need for printout purposes.

Mix in with this, the Focus on Staves feature (which of course you’ve already mentioned),. . . and the hidden text option, and I think you should be able to have everything readily available without having to bounce around between different versions, or different files (not that you were ever considering the different files approach).

Two avoid having two parts to maintain, I would go into parts>copy and change instrument. There you can create another part that shares the same noterest data. You can then show the text/hide tab on one part and hide text/show tab on the other. In case you need to correct your notes/transpose/etc. after the fact, you do it once, not twice.
