Sib. 7.0: Computer
Posted by John D. McLean - 23 Jun 12:57AM
I am looking for a new laptop. Since the most demanding thing that I do on the computer is with Sibelius I am looking for a computer that will work good w/ Sibelius. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I would like to recommend that you skip Dell. 10 years ago, I bought a Dell desktop and the sound card was defective. Turned out they knew this and sold the machines anyway. I swore never again but just a couple of months ago, I ordered a Dell laptop. It works but about a month in, it started telling me that the battery was incompatible with the laptop. The battery does not work. Dell tech support is in India and I can't understand them so I will probably roll the dice and buy another battery. But I will never buy another Dell computer.
You'd think I'd learn, wouldn't you?

All my machines in recent years have been Sony. Very reliable.

My core I5 (old type, nearly 2 yr old) is a Sony and the core 2 duo is a Toshiba. Both are fine although teh sony is rather heavy on battery (but I use it as a desktop replacement so it don't matter)

The most important thing is to choose one with a numeric kepad.

Will you be requiring anything beyond reference playback from this computer?

I agree with Laurence about the keypad, although if you want a smaller laptop to tote round you could always get a cheap usb keypad (I used one with my Toshiba - the sony had a wide screen and pad)

Now that wide-aspect screens are ubiquitous, there's little reason NOT to include a numeric keypad when designing the keyboard. Apple seem to be holding out on the MacBook range though. A pity, they make life so much easier
