Sib. 7.0: configuration diksabled
Posted by Francis Grier - 16 Jun 11:04PM
Last December I upgraded to Sibelius 7. Last Friday my computer was invaded by the SMART Repair Virus. I have now eliminated the virus, and my PC is working fine, but Sibelius 7 has one problem: on playback devices, the configuration is disabled: there is nothing on the configuration tab, and nothing happens if I click on "New...". I need to export a MP3 file, but on the Home page in the relevant Export section, it says i can't because "this poayback configuration does not play any virtual instruments. Please use another configuration." But I can't, because, as i have explained, the configuration doesn't work. In any individual file, if I make Sibelius Player my active device, and choose Sibelius 7 sounds, it will work on my PC, but will still not constitute a configuration. I have tried totally uninstalling both Sib 7 and Sib Sounds, and then reinstalling them and the situation remains identical. Perhaps it is relevant that the folder entitled VSTPlugins is empty?

Without hands-on access to the infected machine, it is very difficult to give precise advice. We have no information on how you "eliminated the virus", and whether that process might have been damaging to Sibelius structures in the filing system.

So here is basic generic advice:

1. Re-install Sibelius. Download the latest 7.1.2 installer from:
http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/updates/sib7_1_2.html
and install it.

2. If the problem persists, nuke Sibelius's record of your Playback Configurations, as follows:
- ensure Sibelius has quit: restart Windows if you are unsure;
- click Start -> All Programs -> Avid -> Sibelius 7 User Data;
- in the folder that opens, rename the sub-folder "Playback Configurations" to something else;
- launch Sibelius 7. It will re-create "Playback Configurations" with the default as-shipped configurations.

3. If the problem persists, call back here, with any additional or new information you might have by then.

thanks - but maddeningly nothing has worked yet. i've tried it all, and the basic problem is the same: configuration is disabled. Also (is this related?), if I press the Audio Engine button, the two "answers" for Outputs are disabled (they're grey and don't respond); and the same is true for the "repair" and "clean up" buttons. And when I look in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\VSTPlugins folder, it's quite empty, although I've re-installed Sibelius Sounds - is that as it should be?
BTW, I cleaned up the virus using PCTools Spyware with Antivirus - and, as far as i can see, i now have everything else on the computer working as before. It's an ACER Aspire 5750 laptop, using Windows 7 Home Premium. all other sounds appear to be working properly.
your help is very much appreciated.

It is normal for the VSTPlugins folder to be empty, because Sibelius Player is built-in and is not a plugin.

Could you please post screen-shots of:
- the Playback Devices window;
- the Audio Engine Options window.

No screen-shot attached. Make sure the file is named with a .png or a .jpg extension (as appropriate), in lower case, and is less than 900kB in size.

Make sure the image you're trying to attach is in PNG or JPG format, and is smaller than 900K in size.

OK - the Audio Engine Options look normal, even the greyed out buttons are normal. The Playback Devices window is not normal, as not even the default Sibelius configurations are available.

Please try this:

1. In Audio Engine Options, select a (DS) audio interface instead of the WASAPI one currently selected. Then click OK all the way out, quit Sibelius, and re-launch it. Are there now usable Playback Configurations? If so, stop here and use them. If not, go on to step 2.

2. If the problem persists, nuke the PlogueEngine memory as follows:
- ensure Sibelius has quit: restart Windows if you are unsure;
- click Start -> All Programs -> Avid -> Sibelius 7 User Data;
- in the folder that opens, rename the sub-folder "PlogueEngine" to something else;
- launch Sibelius 7. It will re-create "PlogueEngine".

I would also suggest deleting the 'Playback Configurations' folder as well as the 'PlogueEngine' folder.

It's worked! I had to redo the PlogueEngine - and i also re-deleted the Playback Configuration - and now it's working.
Thank you, Robin & Daniel, very much indeed.
