Sib. 6.x: metronome mark for non-standard time signature
Posted by Charles Mead - 08 Jun 05:30AM
I have a piece in 10/8 which is grouped as 3,3,2,2. I had no problem entering the time signature and setting the groupings from a notation perspective, but can't figure out the best way to set the metronome marking to achieve the right playback speed (think of Brubeck's "Blue Rondo a la Turk" or a Bartok Hungarian Dance from the Microcosmos as a rough equivalent of the basic problem.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance --

You have a choice. You can either set the tempo for 8th notes or quarters. "Blue Rondo" is in 9/8 time (2,2,2,3), but your example (3,3,2,2) is more like "Take Five". In either case, I would favour q = 160 (or thereabouts). If you measure it in 8ths, e = 320 and my metronome doesn't go that far.

Yes, I agree (and sorry for the sloppy reference to "Blue Rondo" -- I was just trying to point out the grouping/pulse issue, and yes, my piece has more of a "Take5" feel).

I can get the right playback sound at 8th = 240. I just would like to have a metronome notation that captures the grouping that Sibelius recognizes. However, in looking at some Bartok scores, I can see that simply putting in the 8th note pulse is probably the best choice.

Thanks!!

Hi there

You can show two (equivalent) metronome markings if you like. For your 10/8 I might use

q. = 80 (q = 120)

which shows the dotted quarter pulse first (as it is encountered first).

Hope that helps

That's a good idea, Jeremy. Out of curiosity, which one does the dictionary read, first or last, not that it makes a difference?

Charles, I noticed that that the notes on your bass staff are all out of range. That's OK if you are using GM sounds for playback, but not with Sib Sounds. You might want to change instrument to bass voice on this staff. Also, your two tenors are currently assigned to baritone voice.

Playback will read them all, so the last one (last in a single text object, or attached later in time) will take precedence.

I'm not sure what happens if you have two objects attached to exactly the same point. One could experiment.

Thanks! I opted to put !th= 240 (the actual tempo for playback "correctness) and then in parens notate to larger pulsed sub-divisions...Sibelius seems to either understand them or ignore them as they don't adversely affect playback.

To make sure that a text object doesn't affect playback, select it and turn off "play on pass" in the Inspector.
