Sib. 7.1: Missing fonts
Posted by Mike Chamberlain - 04 May 08:38AM
Just installed Sib 7. Opening an old Sib 6 score, I get the "Missing fonts" window - Maestro, Vivo and Marker Felt being the missing fonts.

Clkicked "Use Default" and continued. Save the score, open it again, and get exactly the same message. Tried this several times.

FInally found where you'd hidden the old Sib 6 fonts setup, and found a text style called Vivo, which presumably was using the Vivo font. Tried to delete it but it says it can't because the style is used in the score. Using "Find", searched for all text objects using Vivo style, and it can't find any.

And that was the easy one. There aren't any text styles conveniently named "Maestro" or "Marker felt" so do I have to go through and edit every single text style to try to find the usage of these fonts?

Why doesn't Sibelius just substitute an alternative font instead?

Help, please!

Those fonts are not part of any of Sibelius's default house styles, so you've presumably been creating your own text styles that use them.

In Sibelius 7.1.2, all you have to do is choose an appropriate substitute font in the Missing Fonts dialog itself, and click OK: Sibelius will save each of your choices and automatically suggest those choices for future scores you open, so you can simply click OK.

Or, if you don't want to bother with this at all and have Sibelius continue to automatically, silently substitute the default fonts it was also substituting in Sibelius 6, go to the Files page of Preferences and switch off the option to warn about missing fonts.

Thanks. But I'd also quite like to clear up what appears to be an internal inconsistency in the Sib file - i.e. the fact that it won't let me simply delete the offending text styles, and yet any attempt to find objcts that use them returns nothing. Anything I can do to fix that?

What does the "Use defaults" button on the missing fonts dialog do? It appears to do nothing at all!

Attach the score here and I may be able to help.

The 'Use Defaults' button means that you hard-set the default font substitutions defined on the Font Equivalents page of Preferences, if there are any default substitutions defined that affect the fonts shown in the dialog, which in the case of Vivo et al there are not.

Hi Daniel

OK, here it is. I deleted everything except four empty bars, but it still gives the missing fonts error!

And if you choose "Don't show this again" then "Use default fonts", save the score and re-open it?

Do you HAVE these fonts? Do you want to use them?

Re: Sib. 7.1: Missing fonts

I didn't choose "Don't show this again" because I assumed that is a system-wide setting, not just relating to this particular score.

But as stated before, I did click "use default fonts", save and re-open, and still got the error message, so it clearly didn't do any font substitution - or if it did, it didn't save it, as I would have expected.

No I don't have the fonts and no I don't want to use them. I'd just like to get rid of any anomalies in my Sibelius files. I've been using Sibelius since version 1, and some of my scores probably have ancestors going back that far, so there's plenty of opportunities for internal inconsistencies to have arisen!

The score uses fonts:
- Maestro in Text Style "Maestro (2)";
- Marker Felt in Text Style "Version";
- Vivo in Text Style "Vivo".

Yes, I know it does - I already pointed that out above.

The point is that I cannot delete those text styles because it says they are in use in the score.

And yet the score contains just four empty bars, and if you search for text using those styles you get nothing.

PS I've checked in Sib 6 and the same problem exists there - so this is just something that has been highlighted by the "missing fonts" dialog in Sib 7. But I'm at a loss what is causing this - I tried opening a score and deleting all the instruments, leaving just a little white box in the middle of the screen - and it still won't let me delete the text style because it's "in use"!

The text styles are most likely used by a symbol or line style definition.

Yes, both Maestro and Vivo fonts are used in custom Symbol definitions in that score.

OK thanks - I don't suppose there's any way of easily identifying the offending symbol definitions? - presumably you've used some fancy sib file analysis tool that isn't available to us mere mortals!

The offending symbols are in a custom house style file that I still use so it might be useful to get rid of them if I can, since I don't appear to be using them any more.

No, I just conducted an exhaustive manual search of all the custom Line and Symbol definitions.

The culprits are the last four custom symbols, which have not been assigned names, so I can't tell you what they are called.

Gosh, dedication beyond the call of duty - thanks!

I've found them now and got rid of them. Also found the culprit ... it's the Vienna Symphonic Library House Style. I checked the latest version from their website - downloaded, installed, created a new score using that house style, saved, re-opened, and up came the three font errors that I'd had previously, plus another one (Lucida Grande)!

Yes, I can confirm that. It looks as if VSL make their House Styles on a Mac (hence Lucida Grande) that has Finale installed (hence Maestro). I don't know the origins of Vivo or Marker Felt, whether they are associated with a known music application, or whether they are just random fonts that VSL have picked up somewhere.

For what it's worth, a close substitute for the Mac font "Lucida Grande" is the Windows font "Lucida Sans Unicode".

Vivo was the music font for MOTU Mosaic, I believe.

Marker Felt is a standard font on Mac OS X.

FWIW, Lucida Sans Unicode doesn't look an awful lot like Lucida Grande, by the way.

The letter forms are of course similar, but the metrics are quite different.

To get rid of the message without turning it off or removing text styles, edit the text styles using the fonts, and change the substituted fonts to themselves. To do this, you have to change the font to something else, and then change it back. Note in the screen shots that the original font in parentheses has gone away.

I believe that this shows a bug: Clicking "Use Defaults" apparently does nothing, rather than changing the score to substitute the fonts permanently.

Sorry Daniel, you're right; I didn't read your post carefully enough. What I read (and misinterpreted) is the text shown in the screen shot. Maybe it could be modified at some point to be similar to your post, which is a clearer explanation of what's going on.

Hmmm. I have recently found that Sib 7.5 is telling me that I am missing fonts that I definitely have installed on my Windows 8 machine. In fact, the dialog box then suggests I replace the missing fonts with the fonts it thinks are missing...

Thoughts on this?

Melinda,
To fully understand this, we would need to know the internal names of all those fonts, not just their external filenames.

The problem is probably provoked by having fonts of the same family name but different weights, in different font files.

But it should be correct to accept what Sibelius offers as the correct mapping.
