Sib. 6.x: New downloadable plugin: Solfege
Posted by Bob Zawalich - 13 Apr 12:02AM (edited 13 Apr 12:29AM)
A new plugin, Solfege, is available for free download at http://www.sibelius.com/download/plugins/index.html?plugin=412, category Text.

(I apologize for leaving the accent off the e, but it wreaks havoc with HTML).

This plugin adds syllables to selected notes, similar to what Add Note Names does. The syllables come from lists of Solfege systems that provide syllables to be used for the lowered, natural, and raised forms of the seven scale positions of a major scale.

The plugin provides a ''movable-do'' mechanism, where you specify the pitch for degree 1 of the scale. By default it assigns ''1'' to the root of the (major) scale used at the start of the selection, based on the key signature.

So you can have Do Re Mi in any key.

This can use useful for ear training, and probably a bunch of other things.

You can edit the Solfege systems, and create new ones, and these are retained across Sibelius sessions.

It does not provide octave designations or rhythmic values (such as, for example, the Add Tonic Sol Fa does). It does adjust itself when key signatures change.

There are other plugins that provide a similar capability. Add Tonic Sol Fa provides Moveable Do, but it also provides a lot of detailed notation appropriate for that one system only.

Add Note Names provides a "Fixed Do" model when you use the French or Spanish options, where Do is always C even if you are in a different key.

Add Note Names to Noteheads puts the pitch names inside the noteheads, so it is really a Fixed Do system as well.

Solfege will let you add new systems of syllables, so you can use Ut or Si or anything else you like, and it will retain your new systems across Sibelius sessions (you can even export your custom systems to a text file, and import them on another machine).

A screen shot with examples is attached.

I started this after a request by Sean Frenette, who wanted something to notate Sargam, for notating Indian music. He probably really wanted something more like Add Tonic Sol Fa, that handled more details of the notation, but this is at least a starting point.

Wonderful.
I'm also interested in sargams. Do you think it would be possible to get a . over the word in the upper octave, a . below in the lower plus _ under for flatted 2,3,6,7 and _above for the raised 4. If so you have a complete system for hindustani music. Is it too tall an order?

Yes, it is too tall an order for the generic plugin. It does handle the underline - you will note that the system we created has some elements that are preceded by an underscore, and those will display as underlined.

The problem for the other elements is that they are not available in common fonts, and providing the orthography with symbols is just too awkward. You really want at least a single and double dot for 2 octaves, and possibly even 3 dots. There is nothing that handles the "overline" in the normal fonts.

There is at least one font, the free Dustismo Sargam font that has some of these features.(http://sitarplayer.net/Sargam_Font).

It seems to provide at least some of the properties, though I am personally not crazy about the look of the font itself.

A plugin to really handle Sargam would at least need to process octaves and probably deal with a special font, either Dustismo Sargam or another font that we commission to support the features required. Something with Hindustani symbols would also be useful.

Sean and I discussed the possibilities of having a plugin based off this one with more specific sargam features, but I don't have the time right now to work on it.

But if such a plugin is written I will let you know so you can provide input to what might be useful features.

I note that I just updated the plugin so that it saved an edited solfege system even if you cancel out of the main dialog. I think that is probably the more useful thing to do in general.

Thank you Bob, very good info. Let's hope a good font will turn up, that's all needed if I understand you rightly.

Fantastic work Bob
would it be possible to add:
1-
"use chord symbol root as Match "1" to major scale"
the plug takes the roots of the chord symbols as 1 for each measure
auto melodic analysis :=)
2-
an option to have the result appear under the notes also

#1 would be an entirely different plugin, I fear. I believe that Roman Molino Dunn has one or more harmonic and melodic analysis plugins around, either on the download page, or for sale inexpensively on his website (http://www.themusictranscriber.com/). You might contact him to see what is available.

#2 You can choose different text styles to use for the syllables. Choose on, such as lyrics, that goes below the staff, or define your own text style with the desired characteristics.

In the current version of the plugin, you can type in a text style name as long as it is defined in the score. If a text style is actually used in some text in the score, that text style will also show up i the list of text styles availabe, and you can choose it from the list.

This plugin was updated today:

Corrected problems with import/export, added ability to delete a system, added a PDF file explaining how to use the plugin.

Warning: this version will erase any settings made in earlier versions, so write them down (or export) before upgrading.
