Sib. 6.x: creating a "Jazz" text "box"?
Posted by Bill Myers - 19 Mar 01:51PM
h/lo again, all
I'm trying to create a kind of text "box", often seen in jazz scores. It's a left parens / right parens, with the tops of the parentheses connected by a horizontal, unbroken line and, as a text box, it would expand as text is entered below the line. Anyone know where I would start to create such a beast?!

Sibelius can do these for you when you're using the Reprise font family: type in your text and then run the Add Brackets to Reprise Script plug-in.

I can't make the plugin work. But I can do it manually by typing:

{I`N`T`R`O`}

(that's curly brackets plus the symbol to the left of my top-row number keys) in Reprise Script.

Daniel, my results were sort of similar to Laurence's, i.e. after I entered text (using Create>Plain Text), and selecting that text, I ran the plug and it said that nothing was selected and did I want to select the whole score. I said "o.k." and it created the desired Jazz text boxes around all of the text already in my score *except* for the new Plain text that I had just put in!

Is this what you want, Bill (see attached)? I adapted these fonts many years ago from Sib's Inkpen Script. The beauty of them is that the line is part of the character so no separate characters need to be inserted. I've been trying to persuade Sib/Avid to adopt my fonts as an extension to the Inkpen suite.

Reprise can manage this (attached). Though I'm not keen on the whole Reprise style, simple text objects seem fine. Isn't there an option to have a bottom on the box too?

Great looking font Adrian. Am I able to use your adaptation?

I don't know what the legal implication is. I modified them from Sib's Inkpen Script font, so I do not hold the copyright. I would dearly like Avid to make them available to all by adopting them as part of the Inkpen suite. If nothing else, it would make file sharing easier for me.

In Bill's case using Plain Text, which uses the font Inkpen2 Script, after running the plugin you could select the text and in the Text Pane of the Properties Window, select the pull-down menu where it reads Inkpen2 Script and push the letter "r" and then select Reprise Script as the font.

The "jazz box" will appear around the letters.

Another option is to make a New copy of Plain Text in:
House Style>Edit Text Styles and make it Reprise Script and assign it a shortcut key.

I've taken to keeping these boxed styles in Ideas (see screenshot) and there is an option to have the box open on the top as well as the bottom.

The problem with having to enter the special character after every normal character (especially if you are putting the Reprise special character between every Inkpen2 character) is that it is not only cumbersome, but will not be recognized by the playback dictionary. My fonts have lines inbuilt with the character, so easy to type and words immediately recognised.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same problem and can't seem to get these to work. That plugin doesn't seem to actually change anything for me. It makes the text have all those weird separators in
it but doesn't make it actually look like the partly open textbox I want. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Edit: I got it working, but every time I run the plugin, it switches the font back to inkpen, and I have to manually switch it (at which point the bracket appears). Anyone know why this is happening?

Kiyren,

which version of Sibelius are you running, and which OS?

From what I can see, looking at the plugin code, it just adds characters to the unformatted text in a selected object. It does not change either the text style (except for optionally changing boxed style to technique) or font.

If you start out with the text being in Reprise does it work for you? That would seem to me to be the old time it would work.

It will only process specific text styles, as indicated in the dialog (screenshot).
