I'm at my wits' end trying to figure out how to make this file play properly. Since the primary purpose of putting this into Sibelius in the first place is to export to an audio file, the playback HAS to be right.

Specifically, there are three instances in which there are barlines in the middle of a measure (16, "33", and the end). Sibelius insists on treating the two parts of the measure as separate measures and inserts rests (invisible, even when hidden objects are shown) to "pad" the rest of the "measures". It also numbers the measures separately.

I've tried putting in system breaks, but that doesn't help. I've tried the split-bar plugin, but it's completely non-intuitive, and all I get out of it is error messages telling me that I'm doing something wrong.

How can I fix this?

To use the Split Bar plugin, make sure there are notes or rests in the bar. You need to select the note in a bar that will become the first note in the 2nd of the 2 bars. So a barline will appear before the selected note (see screenshot).

Do not select the entire bar or the first note in the bar.

If you can't get that to work, you can use Create Bar to create 2 irregular bars which add up to the size of the original bar. Copy the contents of the original bar to the 2 irregular bars, then delete the original bar.

I looked at your score, and those bars are indeed weird - I have no idea how you got them the way you did, but according to some of my plugins, the lengths of the cut down bars are full 4/4 bars. But if you copy the contents out, there is no extra material, such as deleted rests.

So I don't really understand what is going on.

However, I took your score and added new 4/4 bars at the same locations, split them with Split Bar, and then copied the material from your bars into the new bars. I then deleted your original bars.

The split bars now look and behave as I would expect. I used the bar change options in Split Bar so the bar number does not increase with the split bars.

Sometimes things get weird, and the easiest thing is to delete things and start again, so that's what I did here. Hope it helps.

Thank you so much, Bob. I appreciate your taking the time to look at this. The first two split bars are working great. The last one (at the end) wasn't working correctly, so I thought perhaps you either missed it or left it as an exercise for me ( :) ). I tried splitting it myself, as you described, but the playback still ends at the D.C. al Fine and doesn't go back to the beginning as it should. I'm not sure what to try next.

Whatever tool you use to make trhem, I think the key concept is that in Sibelius, we don't have split bars. They are always actually two shorter bars They may have key signatures removed and bar numbers adjusted to make them LOOK like a single split bar. But the true underlying structure will always be two bars.

I was not attempting to leave you an exercise; I did not check playback but just made sure that the bars were split in a reasonable way.

I just went back in and looked at Play > Repeats and saw that the playback suggested was not correct.

I had no real idea why this should happen, but I went in and recreated all the special barlines, and recreated the final bar, and for some reason that I do not understand, Play > Repeats shows the right values.

So this version should playback correctly.

Thank you SO MUCH, Bob! It plays perfectly now! I never noticed that Play > Repeats before. I'm still learning my way around Sibelius, so thank you for teaching me something new!

Glad it worked. Play > Repeats is really useful; even when you are not setting up a manual playback, it will tell what bar order will be automatically played and it gives you a place to look if things are not right.
