Sib. 7.1: Sounds problem
Posted by stringtheory - 13 Mar 09:54PM
I had, until recently, a completely working install of 7.1 and its sounds. the library is installed on an external hard drive. Last week my iMac internal drive died. I had a new one installed, and restored from a current Time Machine backup. Now I am not getting any sound out of Sibelius. I am using the Sibelius Player with Sibelius 7 Sounds, but when I click on "Test" in the Audio Engine Options window, I get the "error loading a sample" message.

I am seeing some levels in the mixer - on a piano score, the piano channels show levels. There is also a channel that labeled "S. Player" which is showing no level. Other applications are outputting normally.

I reinstalled the 7.1 Sounds update and restarted. Still the same. I checked the Library xml file (/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius Sounds/Libraries/Sibelius 7 Sounds.xml) and i see:

Sibelius 7 Sounds
/Volumes/samples&loops/Sibelius 7 Sounds
"

which is the proper path to the Sounds install.

Any ideas?

Tony

Oops - the xml file reads:

"
Sibelius 7 Sounds
/Volumes/samples&loops/Sibelius 7 Sounds
"

I think the forum interpreted some of that as html, without the quotes - hopefully this will display properly.

Another clue - when I switch the configuration to General MIDI (basic), the mixer channel changes to DSL MUsic Device, shows levels, and I get sound. So, something is up with the Sibelius Player, then.

Did you install the Sibelius 7 Sounds library from all *four* of the discs you received? Often folks seem to miss the installer on the disc labeled Program DVD.

Hi Daniel, yes, they were all installed - I had a fully operational version of 7.1 with sounds until a few days ago. When I reinstalled yesterday, though, I only reinstalled the 7.1 update. Do you think I should reinstall all the sounds beginning with 7.0 and then the updates?

I will try that tonight and report back.

Btw, my install is from a download, not from CDs.

OK, I reinstalled the original Sibelius 7 sounds, restarted, then reinstalled the 7.1 sounds update and restarted. Same result - no sound, no level shown on the Sib Player channel of the mixer despite seeing levels on the piano channels (or whatever channels a score has), and the "error loading samples" message when testing the Sibelius Player configuration.

Make sure that the Sibelius Player fader in the Mixer is not set to zero and pan all the way to the left.

The fader is up, and pan has no effect. There is still no level showing on the S. Player channel. I am still getting the "error loading samples" message when I click "Test" while Sibelius Player is selected in the Playback Devices window (see attachment). And it all still works if I switch the Playback Device to General MIDI (basic).

Should I reinstall the whole application? Beginning with the earliest version of 7 i have, and then going through ll the updates? Or should I trash the prefs first?

It may be sufficient simply to install the Sibelius 7 Sounds update:

Well, something's not right, because the Woodblocks.patch that it's looking for is only installed by the Sibelius 7 Sounds update.

Hi Daniel -

I reinstalled 7.0 and then all the upgrades, to 7.1. No change. Trashed the prefs - no change.

I moved the file "/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius Sounds/Libraries/Sibelius 7 Sounds.xml" which i assume is the file that tells Sibelius where to look for the sounds library, to the trash. When I rebooted Sibelius, it did not ask me where to look for the sounds, and I got the same results as before.

Is there some way to tell it where the sounds are again? How would I get back to that state, where Sibelius needs me to tell it how to navigate to the Sounds Library? I have a feeling that if I could tell it again, my problems would be over...

Once you've deleted that file, Sibelius no longer thinks the library is installed at all, so it won't ask you to locate it.

Did you reinstall the sounds as well as the application itself when you reinstalled everything?

Daniel - I reinstalled Sibelius 7 Sounds, beginning with the original package, then the 7.03 and 7.1 updates, restarting in between. Still the same results - no sound, and when I test the configuration I get the "error loading sample" message. I restored the Sibelius folders in the Library/Application Support/Avid directories of both the root directory and the User directory, from backups which were from a time when all was working. Still getting the same result. Help! How can I get my Sibelius 7 Sounds back??

Very strange. I must have missed something, but I don't know what it is. I'm loathe to suggest going back to square zero again. Do you have the appetite for a further reinstall? If so, let me know, and I can see if I can suggest the precise steps to follow.

Yes, I would do that...not much choice, really...do you absolutely completely 100% guarantee that it will fix the problem? :-)

Does it begin with an an uninstall?

Re: Sib. 7.1: Sounds problem
Posted by stringtheory - 17 Mar 04:46PM
Daniel! I solved it!

the path to my sounds in the xml file had to be written: "/Volumes/samples&loops/Sibelius 7 Sounds" with the ampersand escaped.

Instead, it was being written: "/Volumes/samples&loops/Sibelius 7 Sounds"

I discovered this by going back even farther into my backups.

I don't know if Sibelius was making this error with the updates, or if I introduced it somewhere. anyway...for me, it's over...you may want to see if that's a problem with the installer.

Now: to check if the hairpin plays back properly.

heh - I just noticed that when I escaped the ampersand in my message, all you see is an ampersand! the first line should have had, in blue, and ampersand, amp, a semicolon - all between the word "samples" and the word "loops".

the sceond content path line just has an ampersand

Daniel - just a report: the Sib 7.12/Sib Sounds 7.12 update broke the connection to the volume I keep my sounds on in the same way, and the same correction fixed it - this time instantly, without my going through a bunch of reinstallations and restarts!

Best,

Tony
