Sib. 7.1: Instrument Change + Key Signature + Multirest Issue
Posted by James R Bevan - 20 Feb 04:06AM
Here's one I can't figure out.
In the Sax/Keys 2 part: in order to have a nice-looking key signature at the 12/8 start, I've hidden the instrument change and dragged it a bar earlier (and put in the name of the new instrument as plain text).
The trouble is, the hidden instrument change causes me to have a 6-bar multirest instead of 7 in the actual single Sax/Keys 2 part.
Any way to have all three things? :)

If you can engineer the instrument change to take place at a system break, you can switch off the 'Key signature' checkbox for the first bar of the new system, and then the instrument change's new key signature will do the job of showing the right key signature for that bar.

One last (hopefully) observation: Resetting the note position in another part will also mess up the Sax/Keys2's 7-bar multirest -- weird!

I think you're giving yourself problems by combining a single-stave Sax with a double-stave Keyboard part. How about keeping the instruments on separate staves but creating a combined Part? Hide Empty Staves takes care of the rest.

See attached score

Thanks Daniel!
I made the 2nd stave plus the next bar into a system, deleted the instrument change, put it back in at the first bar of the 3rd system, switched off the 'Key signature' checkbox for the first bar of the new system, and hid the instrument change. I hid the cautionary 2 sharps at the end of the first system but of course still had an awkward space between the double bar & the cautionary time signature, into which I manually put naturals. Not too bad! I now just have to remember to not do the somehow (in this case) undo-able reset note position, which likes to move my naturals back a bar.
(Laurence's suggestion would increase the amount of double-staves in the score -- in some of my scores that's the difference between a 2- and a 3-page score.)

While I'm here, I have another similar (but no instrument change) multirest issue elsewhere, but I can't attach 2 files, so I'll start a new thread...
Thanks again!

Actually, ya, I should manually put in 5 naturals, shouldn't I? :-P

...and put them where the flats go, not the sharps!
Thanks again.

Here's another solution. Do a key change at the 12/8 in the sax line using "one staff only" to Bb (what the sax would sound) then create another change of key on the 1st note of the 2nd bar of the 12/8 to Cmaj again using "one staff only" but also hide. Then just move your instrument change slightly forward to the middle of the 1st bar of 12/8 and reset note spacing. I think that's what you wanted to achieve.

What a great solution. Also a shame that it's required. Hopefully will be fixed in a future update.
