Sib. 7.0: Scoring a film in Sibelius?
Posted by brett.r - 22 Nov 12:40AM
Has anyone fully scored a movie in Sibelius? I will be working on a short 3 minute animation and am considering scoring it in Sibelius rather than Digital Performer. If so, how do you handle things like markers and calculating tempo changes? It's going to a Looney Tunes type score so there'll be plenty of tempo/time sig changes, which DP handles beautifully, but I'm loving working in notation at the moment and if it weren't too cumbersome would like to try doing it in Sib.

Any thoughts or experiences to share?

thanks
Brett

I've composed and scored dozens of sound tracks using Sibelius and GPO...

You can import a MIDI file into Sibelius which will retain all tempo and time signature information, and I think also cue points. You can also add hitpoints from within Sibelius.

Have a look at the score Project 5.sib in Sibelius Example Scores/Project Files, which shows the use of hitpoints synced to a short video clip.

Thanks for the replies. I thought there might be a few more people who do film work in Sibelius but I guess not.

Nice writing Richard, enjoyed the clips I looked at.

There are lots and lots of people using Sibelius to score for films, including at the highest professional level in Hollywood and elsewhere, but they don't all hang out here!

Seems like none of the lots and lots hang out here. I might try posting on a couple of composer forums.

I do a lot of composing for film and TV. Often the client wants to hear a mock-up before any live instruments are recorded.

My work method: I always compose MIDI scores in DP, mainly because many of my sounds have slow attacks, so I play them in early to make them sound when they should. Also I might play chords rather than allocate voices or lines to Vln1, Vln2 etc. In DP I'm not really thinking of an actual orchestra.

If I am then recording a live orchestra, I make a copy of my work and quantise it so that it will look correct when I import it as a midi file into Sibelius.

From there I continue composing/orchestrating in Sibelius, tidying up the chords I've played, allocating voices etc. At this stage I'm am thinking of a real orchestra in Sibelius rather than a keyboard in DP.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Muffinman, that's also basically the way I've worked until now. But I have a short film to do and I thought I'd try doing it basically in reverse, compose in Sibelius and then finish off in DP. As I mentioned I'm so enjoying working in notation at the moment and that's why I though I'd try it. Anyhow I'm going to have a go.

Brett, your workflow is the same as mine. I find the composition much easier to structure in Sibelius. When I get that worked out, and a first stab at a mockup, I'll export and finesse in my DAW if necessary. If it's getting recorded by musicians, there's sometimes no need to do further mockup, depending on the director's savvy with mockup quality.

I wish Sib 7 were a great mockup tool. It's good and getting better, but I'm afraid it will be a few more releases before it stands on its own (provided they make this a priority).

Thanks for your thoughts Del. I ended up abandoning ship in Sibelius pretty quickly, it's just too difficult to fully render a score in Sibelius alone. I'd love some kind of 'Sibelius Pro' where al the DAW stuff was added and accessible.
