Sib. 7.0: Sibelius 7.03 looses the dynamic parts
Posted by Julio d'Escrivan - 30 Oct 03:35PM
Hi,

I am surprised nobody else has reported this, or maybe I am doing something wrong?

When making dynamic parts in Sibelius 7.03, if I close the file and open it again, I lose all dynamic parts. I don't think it is meant to work this way as I have found it saved them in a couple of occasions only to disappear when reopened the file the following day.

This sucks, of course because There may be a lot of individual formatting you need to do to a part which is then lost, so I am having to extract all parts as I go, with the loss of all the benefits from dynamic parts...

Do I need to do something in particular to make sure changes to dynamic parts do not disappear?

Otherwise, if one needs to tell the score that it is jumbling everything in the parts every time it dynamically creates a part is absolutely useless, I'm having a hard time believing anybody could program it to behave this way, so it must be me, right?

any help much appreciated!

Julio

This does not happen for me.

Can you post a set of *exact* instructions which produce this effect? By "exact", I mean list every keypress and mouse click.

This definitely sounds like a user error of some kind, though I'm not sure what you might be doing incorrectly. If you can provide some more information, we can get to the bottom of it, no doubt.

Hi, thanks for your quick replies...

Here is my process:

1. I go to PARTS and make a new part, tweak the spacings in that part, as you do, and proceed to the next part. When I have done them all, I print them.

2. I then save my work and leave all tabs showing within the sibelius file, that is, the score and all parts.

3. I close the Sibelius file and when I reopen later, my part tabs have disappeared, only the score remains. Sometimes, it does not happen, oddly, but most of the time I lose my parts. Certainly, and I know how silly this sounds, every time I have done this overnight, the next day the tabs are gone!!

In desperation, I then check to see whether if I get 'new part' again, the file has remembered my tweaks to that part, but no. I have to start again!!

I am on Sibelius 7.03, Mac OSX 10.6.8.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Julio

Why are you creating Parts, when Sibelius automatically creates a part for every stave in the score?

Are you quite sure that you are opening the same file in the morning that you saved the evening before?

Does you Mac run any operation overnight which restores files to a previous state?

Have you checked in the pull-down marked "+" whether the Parts are still there, but un-opened into tabs?

You say you're using Dynamic Parts. Can we just check this is correct? When you go to the Parts window, does clicking on Extract come into your work-flow? It's just possible that you are creating Extracted Parts, and failing to save them.

I'm not sure why you're going to the Parts window at all? Dynamic Parts are automatic and are saved with the score, you display the ones you want by clicking the + icon at the far right of the bar under the Ribbon. (I agree, intuition won't get you there, but now you know, memory will!) As long as you save the score before exiting Sibelius, all the editing you have done in Parts will be retained. I'm not sure why your Parts aren't still shown as tabs next time you open the score, but they should still be in the list under that + icon.

Hi Robin,

thanks for the reply, in answer to your four questions:

1. Hmmm... I see, and these parts are out of sight but under the '+' sign on the right? (see reply 4) that's what I was missing, I thought they needed to be generated on demand !!

2. haha!! yes, of course!!! but thanks for asking.

3. no.

4. Haha!! Bingo!! that is it, they disappear from the tabs sometimes, but they are kept and you can access them from the '+' menu...

I must have missed this in the intro video!

Many thanks for your help, you just shortened my workflow enormously!

:)

best,
Julio
