How do you assign a shortcut to the symbols for strings 1-6 on guitar. I found the circled numbers under symbols and guitar but I am lost as to how I assign a shortcut. Help!
Unfortunately, you can't create a shortcut for a symbol. Sibelius 7 now has the advantage to make all symbols appear on top of the panel once they're used. This makes it much more faster to enter them than in Sibelius 6.

To make string numbers faster to access, you can create a new text style (House Style>Edit Text Styles>New in Sib 6) that will put a circle around numbers. If you fiddle with the parameters, you can match the string number symbols quite closely. Then assign a shortcut to that new text style. The advantage of string numbers as text is that you can call them up with one keystroke and edit them by clicking on them [changing the number and so on]. See attachment.
Bob Zawalich has a plug-in for accessing symbols, but as I recall, it required more that one keystroke [and I can't remember the name of it, sorry).
The Add Fingering to Notes plugin has an option to add the string numbers as well. However, it is somewhat font dependent and sometimes does not work on Macs.
I think my mac is confusing the number pad in bobs plugin with the number pad in sibelius, (the one for editing note length etc.)
When I put in circled numbers other symbols show up. Left hand fingering works though.
Any one come across this problem?
There are font issues in using symbol fonts as text characters, as the Add Fingerings To Notes plugin does. I did not have the problem on the Windows machine I developed the plugin on, but it shows up in Macs.
I think we fixed this in Sib 7+, where the plugin ships with Sibelius but we could not change it in Sib 6.
As mentioned above, use the plugin Add Fingering To Notes, to add the fingering numbers. For circled numbers, use the plugin: Add Circled Number Symbols To Notes. For spacing the music wider to accommodate the fingering and circled number symbols, I just manually add line breaks by selecting a bar line and hitting return and then I manually tweak the spacing by selecting a note and hitting shift-alt left or right arrow to nudge it. Although I've tried editing the Note Spacing Rule, I continue to use the defaults and manually tweak.
If you have font problems, use Applications/Font Book to remove all duplicates and restart the mac. (Font Book is an Apple application.)
(Sorry for the delayed response. I was away hiking in Utah for the week. Zion, Bryce Canyon, and more were spectacular!)
If you are using Sibelius 7.1.3 or later, you should not need to use Add Circled Number Symbols for Notes. The Std fonts that were made available in Sib 7+ contain circled numbers and they should work fine. Just use the version of Add Fingering To Notes that ships with Sibelius, and the circled numbers should appear correctly.
Add Circled Number Symbols for Notes is needed for Sib 6, though.
Another problem with Add Fingering to Notes in Sib 7+ is that you can't type numbers into the plugin keypad unless you do it quite slowly. We used a trick in Sib 6 that no longer works in Sib 7 to handle keystrokes.
I recommend that if you use the plugin you should click the buttons with the mouse rather than typing.
