Sib. 7.0: How to play the "harmonics" articulation back
Posted by Fritz von Flotow - 11 Sep 08:47PM
Simple question: I looked through the available articulations and ... omg! I saw col legno, harmonics, ... I like it, that this has been done thoroughly this time. So I tried somthing with col legno and it got played back, just by writing the text (technique) "col legno" above!
I didn't have any success with the harmonics. I tried both natural and artificial harmonics. I also used the plugin to get harmonics sound right, as I did in previous versions. That didn't load the harmonics samples in, either.
So, did anybody figure that out?

The plugins do not load harmonics samples, they just play pitches that are of the appropriate pitch.

Some instruments support harmonics samples and some do not. I have not really worked with the Sib 7 sounds much, so I can't say which ones support it; the ones that do should play back correctly without you needed to do anything but add the appropriate articulation.

Ah, you are right! There are only harmonics for Violins, not for chamber and solo violins! Damn! Not as good as I thought ...
However, they are only played back, when I write in the way you write natural harmonics, and do not sound an octave higher than written. The correct way of writing them (4th or 5th with the upper note in diamond shape) does not work at all ...
:-(
I would have wished, they had recorded everything consistently, meaning all articulations for string sections also for all solo strings ... hopefully they are gonna record those at some later point!
I don't care for the best quality, because sibelius is obviously never going to sound as good as a well sequenced DAW mock up! It doesn't have to, cause it's not made for that! But I would expect a solid approximation of my score including rare articulations.

If you look in the playback dictionary, you will see that the harmonic/open articulation plays back with a soundid change to +harmonic. Also the diamond notehead should trigger a change to +harmonic

So there is underlying support for these changes. I have no idea what the various instruments on sound libraries do when that get a +harmonic change. I would suspect that they might just change the timbre and not change octave (which would not be appropriate for the diamond notehead). In an ideal world, I would want different +harmonic effects to handle the appropriate pitches, but I would guess that would be really hard in the case where there are diamond noteheads at different intervals, representing different pitches.

There are some plugins that will at least give a correct pitch by various degrees of trickery (the shipping Harmonics Playback, the downloadable String Harmonics and String Harmonics Sounding Pitch)

and these work with the diamond noteheads at various intervals. Might be the best you can do at this point.

My solution:

- Input the proper score with the diamond-head notes in Voice 1.
- Input the sounding pitches in Voice 2 (or copy it from Voice 1, delete the upper [diamond-head] notes, and transpose the remaining notes 2 octaves higher).
- Hide Voice 2.
- Select Voice 1 notes.
- Open Inspector.
- Uncheck "Play on pass 1" (or more, if there are repeat lines).

The result: you have the right score, right playback pitches AND right tone colour!
