Sib. 6.2: harp damping playback
Posted by Alexander Plötz - 14 Jul 10:17PM
Hello folks,

does anyone know a trick how I can fake damping playback for harp within Sibelius Essentials (making certain notes stop sounding, e.g. for staccato)?

Thanks,

Alex

None of the obvious approaches do anything for me.

Too bad :-/

How is it with the more advanced sound libraries? I took a look into the GPO4 handbook and it says there, that the harp responds to the sustain pedal controller - implying that it works with a regular note-off.

Here is the least intrusive workaround I have found:

In Play>Playback Devices>Preferred Sounds I substituted the preferred device for the sound ID for damped harp with GM-MODULE (I think this is the "MIDI (enhanced)" device). Surprisingly enough, this GM harp has a quite satisfying note-off that the Essentials harp is missing.

Now I can use the "MIDI (enhanced)" harp for just the notes for which damping is essential without losing the certainly nicer sounding Essentials harp for notes where damping is less important, by putting in the already existing dictionary entry "damp", by creating a custom line that I link via dictionary to the sound ID or, - my favourite :-) - by assigning the sound ID "+damp" to one of the custom articulations on keypad 4.

Shows that there is always something new and interesting to discover in those 750 pages of reference handbook.

EDIT:

And this is to show once again that Sibelius is better than one thinks in most of the cases where there seems to be a problem.

Turns out the Essentials harp is perfectly dampable just by assigning the "+damp" sound ID alone (to any articulation or dictionary entry you like), without any Playback Device substitution.

Hmmm - I had tried adding the text "damp" above notes and it did not seem to make any difference. "damp" maps to the soundid "+damp", so I would have expected it to work if substituting the sound id works.

Anyway, gald you got something to work.

Yes, I just checked it out. I made a scale and gave each note a "damp" technique text. This won't stop the normal l.v. at all during regular playback. Strangely enough, it seems to work allright as soon as one plays back with the staff selected.
The problem is remedied though as soon as one changes the dictionary option for "damp" from "until next sound ID change" to "until start of next note. But I haven't the slightest idea why...
