If I have two voices on one stave, how can I separate them into two staves?

If I have two voices on one stave, how can I separate them into two staves?
(Using Sib 4 but I doubt that that matters.)

Joe

Sorry, I couldn't find this in the manual and via key word searches.

You can use Notes > Arrange to explode the two voices onto separate staves.

Thanks for responding. Somehow, it didn't work for me.

• I selected the first stave having two voices: flutes 1 & 2.
• I selected Notes > Arrange
• The first option was Explode so I clicked that.
But the two voices remained on the one stave.

I could, of course, make a new stave, copy the two parts onto both, then go through deleting the second part from one and the first from another. But this is very slow and tedious. I'm looking for some automated way of doing it.

Thanks for any advice.
Joe

Explode merely separates the notes into individual voices. You must then select each voice and move them each to its own staff. There is no automated way.

Actually, using the Explode plugin does explode the two voices onto separate staves. Automatically. (Although it does need some cleanup afterwards, you don't have to do any of the "exploding" manually.)

I've done this many times, and just ran a quick test in 6.2 to make sure it still works. It does.

EDITED to fix a typo.

I don't know about plugins. I was describing the Explode function in the Notes dropdown.

The Explode plug-in is not available in Sibelius 4, only the Arrange feature.

Oops, sorry, I'd totally forgotten this was Sib4 we were talking about. Just another reason to upgrade. . . . ;-)

So, two more questions:
• Is there an easy way to select each voice, all the way through the part, or must I do it bar by bar?
• If I bought the upgrade, what would be the difference?

Thanks
Joe

You can use Edit > Filter > Voice 2 to select the notes in just one voice.

The upgrade to Sib 6? Many, many, many differences (improvements) in general, far too many to even attempt to summarize here.

As far as the current topic goes, you'd have the Explode plugin, which will solve 99.99% of your woes.

Excellent. That is almost the complete answer to my question. The remaining questions are these:

• Doing the above produces a second part on which all the stems point down. I can use the X command to flip them, but this either flips all, or else I must go through one by one. Is there an automatic way?

• Doing the above leaves rests in place of the removed part. These can be hidden, but is there a way of deleting them all automatically?

Thanks very much for your help. I did search fairly hard in the reference for this, but using keywords like 'separate' and 'parts' 'second' etc didn't help. You might make a note for the next update of the reference material.

And yes, when I next have a big work, I'll get the upgrade.

Joe

Joe, do you want to separate the parts in the score itself or do you just want to provide separate parts for the players? If the latter, then you extract the combined part (window/parts/ extract icon). I save the extracted part twice, renaming these as, e.g., flute 1 and flute 2, then I edit each part separately. You end up with three extracted files, the two you have edited and the extracted combined part which you can delete.

The former I now know how to do (thanks all), except for the bit about the stalks on the notes: is there an automatic way to do that?
It would be good to know the latter, also. Once again how to get rid of the rests left from the other part, and how to fix the stems on the notes.

Thanks very much for writing

Under Filter/Voices you'll see the command to filter a single voice. Make a selection, filter the voice with the unwanted rests. Press Delete twice. The first time will hide them, the second will remove them.

If any stems are still the "wrong" way, do a Select All (Ctrl-A) and look in the Properties window, section General. There's a box called "Flip". Clear it.
