Sib. 6.2: Rehearsal mark horizontal position
Posted by Les Hooper - 23 Mar 07:32PM
I need to have my rehearsal marks horizontaly aligned to the bar line
and not the note. Often on a first bar of a line the rehearsal mark interferes with the musical note ... many times the middle bars are close to OK but the
1st of a line is way intrusive. Is there anyway I can adjust that?

Rehearsal marks on parts can be moved any way-vertical or horizontal. On the score they can be moved vertically if they interfere with a note. More often, one has a tempo instruction at the first bar but that can moved to avoid clashes and I've noted that the rehearsal mark always seems to avoid that?

Thanks Noel, but I meant the 1st bar of any line not just bar #1.
Maybe it's as impossible as pasting inside a triplet ... no?

If someone at Sibelius is listening, please, this issue should be fixed! After preparing scores and parts for dozens of scores in Sib6 I've come to the conclusion that magnetic layout is awesome, except for when it comes to rehearsal marks. In the parts it seems that they by default move horizontally in case of a collision, sometimes as far as to the middle of the next or previous bar and often place below slurs or other staff lines. I cannot think of any situation where this would be desired. In case of collisions, rehearsal marks should only move upwards to place above all staff objects and stay horizontally aligned to the barline. In case of collision with another system object attached to the same bar, the other object should move out of the way to the right. The composer should of course have the possibility adjust the horizontal position, but Sibelius shouldn't do this automatically.

As it is now, when preparing parts for simple scores I've found that there's often not much else required than to check and adjust the position of each rehearsal mark. As everything else falls in place so nicely, it is just annoying that the rehearsal marks often are all over the place...

Rehearsal marks shouldn't move as far as that. Try opening Layout > Magnetic Layout Options and clicking Restore Defaults.

Thank you for the reply Daniel! I'm attaching a score with a typical situation. I did restore default Magnetic Layout options, but still the rehearsal mark is in the middle of the next bar in the Flute 2 part. It's not in the middle in relation to the beats, but it's about as far from the left barline as it is from the right barline. It's also below the slur. I don't think anyone would ever want a rehearsal mark below a slur and I would be very happy if the default settings could be adjusted to avoid this.

Though, now I see that I can perhaps adjust this myself in the magnetic layout options. Thank you for pointing this out!

Hi there

Yes, I think that the settings for rehearsal marks could be improved.

Go to Magnetic Layout Options and find the entry for 'Grouped rehearsal marks (vertical)'.

Change the setting for 'Avoid collisions by moving n spaces' from 1 & 8 (the default for left and right movement) to say 4.5 & 4.5, and see if that helps.

You might also want to increase 'Grouped rehearsal marks (horizontal)' setting from 6.25 spaces up to 8 spaces up.

Hope that helps. I make no guarantee about its usefulness, though: it could have unintended consequences in some situations.

I have problems with rehearsal marks also.

Their definition should not be relative to notes, but to barlines.
