Sib. 6.0: Edu. pianobook written in Sibelius, how to create a table of contents & index?
Posted by Göran Wretling - 09 Feb 02:16PM
I´ve written a piano edu. book in Sibelius (about 260 pages) and wonder if there´s a way to make a table of contents & an index in Sibelius? I´ve now written the t.o.c in MS Word but when I´m now going to create an index for the end of the book I have to copy each entry from the t.o.c. and move them one at the time in alphabetical order from one word document to another. If I change/add just on new page in the Sibelius document I have to redo the whole process with the t.o.c.=>index editing and that takes A LOT of time... Is there any kind of Sibelius plugin for creating a t.o.c. & index based on marked keywords in the edu. material? That would be very very useful to be able to make whole edu. books in Sibelius!!

Sibelius doesn't have any functionality like this, I'm afraid, and nor are there any plug-ins to do it.

I would have done the t.o.c. & index in a separate program (Word for example) and then made a pdf of the whole piano book.

Do you make the entire book in Sibelius? Incl. text blocks?

Would not be difficult for, e.g. Roman, to make that plug for you. You just have to mark up the TOC and IDX entries (or grab it from a text style). Have a talk to Roman and he fix that in no-time.

PS. Depending on the ratio 'text:music' other programs might work better to make your book, like FrameMaker, which has everything you need, and much more. But it depends on the ratio and layout naturally.

I think Mats is correct about doing the TOC and Index in a WP program. I will do this next time around.

My TOC (in screenshot) and a 3 page Q&A were all done in Sibelius. For word check alone, it is worth it to do this in a WP program and then transfer to Sibelius.

There are some programs on Mac, PixelStick (free I think) and Art Director's Toolkit which are extremely useful for lining things up. These may be available for Windows, and if not, I'm sure there are comparable programs.

Putting explanations next to music staves presents a problem, since transferring them from Word (or Pages) to SIb takes so much time (especially since you are always adding and editing as you go), so I preferred to do this all in Sibelius and have it proofread several times :-)

When you copy from Word to Sib, word wrap is not currently available, so right justification must be done carefully inside of the Sibelius margin for long paragraphs.

I may look into FrameMaker and some other book formatting programs, but Sibelius, aside from the TOC and Q&A pages, was very kind to me!

Mats is correct. Thanks. I could certainly make a plugin to do this for you. I have a few System Text plugins which have been modified for publishers to create TOCs for lengthy works. Feel free to email me if you would like a custom plugin developed or to dialog about it :) Thanks Mats!
