Sib. 6.2: Notes in voices 1 and 2 overlap each other in same pitch.
Posted by Hannu Ala - 18 Nov 11:42AM (edited 18 Nov 11:45AM)
Hi!

I try to write dotted half note in voice 1 at the beginning of measure 7, so that its pitch would be E. It overlaps voice 2's eighth note, so that notes are not side by side as they should be. If you try to move that note from G to E manually in the beginning of measure 7, you see what happens: voice 2 moves to the right also in order to give way to note, but both notes overlap. This happens also in other scores, so, please, folks at Sibelius, fix this!

Yes, a rare situation which creates a bug, « known » I suppose. Fix is easy enough: select the note in Voice 2 > Properties > General > Set X to -1.5

Another solution: make the note in Voice 2 headless (Properties > Notes > choose number 7)

It's not that rare--I'm having exactly the same issue. I'm setting the tune of Hyfrydol ("Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus") in preparation for Advent. This exact problem occurs in measures 2 and 10 of the attached .sib file.

This is a new bug--this didn't used to happen (as far as I can recall) in Sibelius 4.

Very frustrating--but thanks for the tip on the workaround.

There is a downloadable plugin, Narrow Two Voices, which is designed especially to handle this situation (it has some other useful options too). It says it's for Sibelius 3-5, but I find it works fine in 6.

I'm afraid this issue has been present in the software since Sibelius 1.x. That we haven't fixed it is because it's quite deep in the guts of the note spacing code. But fix it we will, in some future version!

Daniel, it's very comforting to know that this bug will eventually be fixed. Yeah, not a rare bug at all. I will be sure in the future to not write any music with an F and E flat together. Here are the details on the work-around:

right - click the note to Select and bring up the menu
click Inspector
adjust X plus or minus

and to help this show up better in Google:

Sibelius notes overlap

I have this problem in the attached score. I used Notes/arrange to consolidate oboes 1 and 2 onto a single stave.

I see that Eastside (using 6.2 as I am) has posted a workaround, but I cannot follow it:
right - click the note to Select - OK
and bring up the menu - OK, but I wonder which menu he refers to,
click Inspector - eh ? No such thing, no mention in Reference either. On the Properties panel / Notes section, the L/R tweaker is greyed out.

The following works for me:
Left-Click on the note to select
Open Properties/General
adjust X coordinate to reposition note, and then enter. (The notes play simultaneously as expected.)

By the way, we see day and month in the post date, but not the year. It would be interesting to see the full provenance of posts, especially as fixes were promised by people who may no longer work for Sibelius. Where does this fix stand now ? It would be much more useful to me than a touch screen capability.

As stated in a post above (19 Nov 2010 at 06:36), the quickest and most consistent way of fixing this is to use the downloadable plugin "Narrow Two Voices", in its Action setting "Default Rules of Sibelius 4 (With Certain Problems Fixed)". This saves having to deal with Properties panels, Inspectors, or X-coordinates.

The procedure posted by Eastside (24 Feb 2013 at 05:39) uses the mechanisms of Sibelius 7, not those of 6.

still present in 8.6

come on guys. I have hundreds of these to manually fix now, and I didn't have to do this in MuseScore.

This is trivial to correct, assuming that you have correctly assigned "Voices" to the various notes. The rules are:
- all stem-up notes must be in Voices 1 or 3;
- all stem-down notes must be in Voices 2 or 4.

Then use one of the special modes of the downloadable plugin "Narrow Two Voices" to fix up the remaining bugs.
