Sib. 6.2: red chord symbols
Posted by Mark Lipson - 08 Nov 12:33AM
I am placing chord symbols above the staff, and on occasion, some of these symbols show on the monitor as red (rather than black). They print out in red too. Does anyone have an idea as to how I can correct this? Thank you.

Have you typed in the chords?, For instance if I come to type an "H", Sibelius doesn't understand that this is the German and Scandinavian way to notate a "B", and the H shows as red to indicate a syntax error. (The fun part is than if I type a "B" it will display as an "H", so it's a one way option to have Chord settings to German or Scandinavian).

So typically it's because Sibelius has not understood the chord you typed. But there might be other reasons?

You could try this for the red chord symbol and re-enter them.

For an occasional Legacy Chord use:
Create ->Text -> Special Text -> Chord symbol

This is a text style chord and is more liberal in what is allowed.

Thank you. Yes, I do type in the chords (e.g., I type in "Bb13" for a Bb13 chord. I'm not sure how your answer directly relates to my problem though.

I will try that, thank you. What exactly is a Legacy Chord? On my last composition, the only chords that printed in red were C13(no root), B13(no root), etc.

Legacy Chords are actually a type of text. I find them more easily manageable (IMHO) than the New Chords and I use them exclusively.

We are recommended to use the Newer Chords as seen below:

If you go to:
Help>Documetation>Sib 6 Reference
on p. 117:
Legacy chord symbol input:
In earlier versions of Sibelius, chord symbols were a kind of text, and had to be typed in using special keyboard shortcuts or bits of chord symbol chosen from a word menu. For the purposes of backwards compatibility, it is possible to enable so-called legacy chord symbol input, which makes chord symbols behave the same way as in earlier versions, by switching on the Use legacy chord symbol input checkbox on the Other page of File > Preferences (in the Sibelius menu on Mac).

Be aware that legacy chord symbols do not respond to the edits possible from the Edit > Chord Symbols submenu, and do not change appearance when you change the options on the Chord Symbols page of House Style> Engraving Rules. As a consequence, you are strongly recommended to use real chord symbols.

If you find yourself occasionally needing a legacy chord symbol, you can choose Create > Text > Special Text > Chord symbol to type a single legacy chord symbol into the score. If you want, you can also assign a keyboard shortcut to the Chord symbols text style, and use that shortcut on the occasions when you require a legacy chord symbols – b 5.12 Menus and shortcuts.
-------
One man's deprecated, backward compatible, Legacy chords, are another man's "God's gift to people who like to write chords as they wish to" :-)

C13(no root) is not a chord description that Sibelius recognizes, and when it does not recognize a chord it displays it in red. I don't know why you would have a problem with Bb13 (it works fine for me), unless perhaps you had things set up to recognize German chord names in Engraving Rules > Chord Symbols, which would want only B for a Bb.

Usually you can either use legacy chord symbols, as Richie describes, for such chords or figure out a different way to name them that is supported in Sibelius.

How about a way to disable the red type for something Sibelius thinks is an error, rather than arguing with it about whether it really is an error?

There is a way to not print coloured objects in colour - set your printout to mono, or, if you are using colour for something else, You can select individual chord symbols and set their colour to black using the colour wheel. (I've just tried it, so I know it works!)

Don't think I've ever come across a C13(no root). Could this not be Eø11 or Eø11/Bb (depending on which note is in the bass).

Thanks, Mike, but I meant for a screen capture. I'd like to be able to get a nice clean png of one of my score pages without it looking like corrected Theory I homework.

So, if you follow my second instruction, the red colour will be removed. If you want to zap a load of them, filter for chord symbols and then then change the colour of all of them to black in one go.
