Sib. 4.x: Different Valued Multi-Rests throughout the same score
Posted by Eduardo Tozzatto - 23 Oct 11:13PM (edited 23 Oct 11:14PM)
Greetings,

1) How to create Multi-rests with specific values such as a "3 bar rest" or a " 7 bar rest" throughout the same score?
2) How to create a shortcut for the answer above?

Thanks in advance.

If you have 3 totally blank bars Sibelius automatically makes them 3-bar multirests in the Parts.

Turn on: View>Hidden Objects
to see it this is true and are blank bars or simply select those bars and hit "Delete".

Be prepared to "Undo" what you've done if your score changes though.
(Command + "Z")

There is a toggle switch which could interfere with this:
Shift and Command together with the letter "M"

and go to:
Layout>Auto Breaks
and make sure that: Use multirests
box is checked in the lower left.
=====

If you're talking about actually writing "3 bar rest" above the Part/Score you would go to:
House Style>Edit Lines and find a line similar to what you want and edit it (making a "New" line is probably best) and hide the original line.

You would also have to type in "3 bar rest" each time in a text you prefer. A shortcut key could be made to start the text and the multirest line would have the shortcut key "L".

If this is truly what you're asking post back and it can be explained, but it will have to be mechanically created each time for each multirest.

Hey Richard, thanks for your answer! I "played" with what you're saying a little and still could not find exactly what Im looking for.... I am talking score, not parts even though Im not sure if there will be a difference because I don't really deal with parts too much yet.:)

Here's what happens:
I go to "Layout--Auto Layout "and click on "Use Multi Rests". Then EVERYTIME I have more than 1 empty bar, it creates a Multi Rest with however many empty bars I have. That's not exactly what I am looking for. I would like to be able to have empty bars next to each other without them being automatically combined into Multi-Rests. Whenever necessary I would combine 8 empty bars into a "8 bar Multi Rest" for example. So ideally I would write the whole score first without the Multi Rests, then I would go back and edit the Multi Rests in wherever they were needed.

One more quick thing: When I the "Layout--Auto Layout -Use Multi Rests is ON, and I add 3 bars for example they become a 3 Bar Multi Rest immediately. Not exactly what you want if you're trying to write something in that newly created third bar...

I hope my question make sense. Kind of hard to write these things out in words but I certainly appreciate the help.

Thanks again!

Eduardo

Hi there

It's very rare for scores to need multirests. Usually there's music in them there bars.

You can get what you want by turning on multirests but separating the ones you don't want manually (Layout>Breaks>Split Multirests.

I advise that you turn multirests off during all note-input, to avoid the problem of writing in the third bar, but there is a way to get note-input to the last bar in a multirest: select the multirest (as a box selection), type zero on the second keypad layout once, and then start input. [Edit: I can't remember whether this input method worked the same in 4.x but I think so. Apologies if not.]

Hope that helps
