Sib. 6.2: Change 4/4 to 12/8
Posted by Thier Angers - 07 Oct 12:37AM
Hi,

I want to change the time signature from 4/4 to 12/8, meaning that The triplets becomes 3-8th notes, the quarter notes become dotted quarter notes, etc.

How would I do this?

Thanks

Try this:

Make sure noting is selected is score . . . press "Escape" a couple of times.

Push "T" on keyboard and fill box out as in the screenshot including un-checking: Rewrite bars up to TS

Press OK and your cursor is blue.

Click on the 4/4 TS.

Richie's process changes the time signature, but you actually want to multiply the note durations by 1 1/2 as well.

Try the plugin Plugins > Notes and Rests > Convert Simple Time to Compound Time, which I think will do just what you want.

I guess Richie's non-plugin method needed one more step. Filter for all the triplet brackets/numbers and hide them?

I don't think so.

Thierry wants quarter notes to become dotted quarters. He does not just want to change the time signature, he wants the durations to increase by a factor of 1.5 as well. So an 8th note triplet will become an 8th note, and the triplet will itself disappear.

There is really no remotely convenient way to accomplish this without a plugin.

Bob I realise he doesn't just want to change the time signature, which is why I mentioned that after Richie's method he could hide the triplet brackets and numbers. This of course increases the durations by half.

But, you're quite right, this won't help with quarter notes which need to grow dots, and there's no way to do that easily inside the program proper. I was imagining music just in triplets that could shed the brackets/numbers by them being hidden. But, looking closer the OP specifically mentioned quarter notes.

Plug-in it is!

Here's an example of what the plugin does. Note that it "swings" the 8th notes, rather than making them duplets or dotted 8th's.

Mmm, well the 1.5 factor is not applied in the case of eighth notes in 4/4 then. They should indeed become duplets or dotted 8ths.

The design of the plugin, as stated in the reference, is:

***************
Rewrites passages in 4/4, 3/4 etc. time signatures as 12/8, 9/8 etc., by doubling the length of the odd-numbered eighth notes (quavers) in each bar. (The exception to this rule is that triplet eighth notes, quarter notes and half notes are kept straight.)
************************

That appears to be what it is doing.

Just FWIW, when it was written, a plugin could not create tuplets, so making duplets would not have been an option, even if that was what would have been desired.

I can imagine that it wouldn't be too difficult to modify the plugin to remove the swing feature, so that it would just add dots to anything that wasn't in a triplet. Of course IMO duplets are easier to read, and that change wouldn't be so easy.

Well... This is a normal feature in Finale... I use it all the time!

Richard, The box : Rewrite bars up to TS is grayed out, so I can't uncheck it.

And what everyone else says is right. I need a quarter note to become a dotted quarter note, an eight triplet to become a normal eight note.

And the plugin fixed it, thanks, but why does it write the notes after the bars, instead of rebarring the music?

My guess is that the plugin is not able to reliably change all the notes correctly, so it gives you what it can do separately, so you can review the changes and then copy and paste.

A lot of the older plugins worked this way.

Not quite sure why Thierry, but it's just as well. It's just the way it works.

There are a couple plugins like "Transformations>Double/Halve Note Values" that do that, and as much as I tell people to COPY a score or make a version before a major change, I don't do that myself sometimes.

And if you Save and Close and don't notice a change you don't want, it could be trouble.

So select the bars you'd like to Copy and use:
Option/Alt + Click where you'd like to paste.

BTW, dId the plugin fix everything, dotted quarter notes and all???
