Sib. 6.2: How to choke a crash cymbal with Sibelius 6.2
Posted by Erwinew - 12 Sep 10:49AM
Hi all,

Is it possible to choke (damping/muting a crash cymbal) with the Rock and Pop Instruments > Percussion and Drums > Drum Set (Rock) or other instrument?

1. I've never seen a standard notation to choke a cymbal. Should I create my own notation, or is it already available in Sibelius?

2. Is it possible to connect this notation to a real choke crash cymbal sound? I can't find it under Edit Instrument > Edit Staff Type... > Choose Sound... > General MIDI > GM > Metal.

Thanks!

Erwin

For a live player, I write a cymbal note with a staccato dot and a
top-hat accent, plus the text "crush". The text can be omitted on
subsequent occasions, as long as there's no ambiguity.

Thanks Laurence, that's a good idea for notation.

There's no choke cymbal sound in the standard GM kit, I'm afraid.

Could a choke notation and choke sound be added in an update?

Can I create my own notation or note head and also sample my own choke cymbal sound in the meantime?

A choked cymbal sound is included in the Afrocuban Percussion, Latin Percussion, Cymbals and Marching Cymbals (Rumble) drum kits in Sibelius 7 Sounds.
