Sib. 6.2: Crescendo and Diminuendo problems
Posted by Robby Poole - 05 Jul 09:35AM
I am working on a score that has several dynamic changes. The one that seems to happen a lot are 2 whole notes, tied together (4/4 time). The composer wants the start of the whole notes to be at FF, and then it trails off to a pp by count 4 of the second measure. Just in time to stop prior to the 3 rd measure

I put the FF under the first note, also add a hairpin (diminuendo). As I hit the space bar, Sibelius will not allow the hairpin to extend much further past the second whole note. If I attach the hairpin to the second whole note, of course it does draw it past the second whole note. How do I fix this? Or is there a way? If not, can this be added to future versions of Sibelius?

Secondly, regardless of where I put the hairpin (crescendo or diminuendo), Sibelius plays it at the same dynamic level. It doesn't change. How do I get Sibelius to change volume over the course of the note duration? The instrument that comes to mind are mostly brass instruments (tubas, trombones, and trumpets).

I have attached a file displaying what I am talking about.

Hi there

Extending a hairpin past the second whole note is only a problem when the rest of that staff has no notes, right to the end of the score. As soon as you add a note somewhere later, you will find that you can extend the hairpin in the usual manner.

Hope that helps.

Sibelius will play continuous volume changes over the course of the note, provided your playback device supports it. Anything other than the bog-standard DLSMusicDevice should do it for you without any fuss.

Robby, I agree with you that the diminuendo does not play from ff to pp even when I drag the right end to the right to extend across both whole notes. I have always assumed it just doesn't work.

To hear the sound get more and more quiet over the eight beats, I click on the hairpin and select >Hairpin > (30% of Maximum) in the Playback panel of the properties window. Works fine that way.

Daniel,

Maybe I am a little confused. Right now, this example is being used in a file that has the Sibelius Player as the playback device, not the DLSMusicDevice. It is not playing the diminuendo, unless I am looking at things incorrectly. The DLSMusicDevice is still in the available list, but not being used in the current setup. Any other suggestions? I'm also running 2 instances of KontaktPlayer 2 (AU).

Robby

The hairpin will read the dynamics at both ends of the hairpin only if the hairpin starts and ends within one space of the text dynamic. Otherwise, as Terry says, you'll need to adjust the playback properties of the hairpin using the Playback panel of Properties.

Really? That applies to the start? I assumed the left end of a hairpin started at the current dynamic level, whether left over from something set measures ago or newly set.

This might explain a LOT of problems I've had with dynamics.
