Sib. 6.1: Use of the magic mouse in Sibelius 6 cumbersome
Posted by Rainer Schnelle - 12 Apr 11:13PM
I don't really like the behaviour of the magic mouse with Sibelius. Whenever my finger involuntarily touches the surface of the magic mouse the manuscript starts sliding around which makes note input and editing somewhat cumbersome. I wish I could turn off one-finger-swipe-scrolling just for Sibelius. It works fine elsewhere.

See about adjusting the settings within. . . >File >Preferences >Mouse >Dragging the Paper.

I think you'll be able to bypass this with a setting of - Hold Shit and Drag.

Just a guess, but I hope it works like I'm thinking it might.

Take Care,

Jim

Tried that, but that is not doing the trick, unfortunately. But thanks for the very quick response, btw I liked your little typo :-)

It works fine for me! That's one of the reason that I changed to Sibelius from Finale after 15 years!

In what way does it not work? If you go into the Mouse page of Preferences, and select 'Hold commannd and drag' you shouldn't be able to move the page around unless you first pressed the command key.

If I do as you suggested, once I brush with my finger over the Magic Mouse the page still moves around according to the direction of my finger. And one of the problems is that the moving continues even if I lift my finger off the mouse.

I think the option you mentioned is only good for dragging the mouse but not for brushing the surface of the Magic Mouse. It looks like Sibelius 6 hasn't yet adapted to the new possiblities of the Magic Mouse.

Ah. Not having a Magic Mouse, just an ordinary Mighty Mouse, I didn't realise. Sibelius is obviously thinking you're intending to scroll and it's too sensitive.

In System Preferences, mouse page, is there a way (like there is with a Mighty Mouse) to turn off the scroll 'wheel' function? What you're describing would irritate me something rotten. You have my sympathy.

I use a Magic Mouse pretty extensively with Sibelius and, though I do notice this problem it is only very occasional. I guess this may be to do with the way I position the Magic Mouse - I use it with a wrist rest; I rest my thumb and little finger on the mousemat and my index and ring finger rest on the mouse surface. The wrist rest ensures that my palm is considerably above the top of the mouse. This provides a very stable position so that very little extraneous movement occurs. Consequently I find the Magic Mouse to be more comfortable than any other device I have used.

I quickly noticed the same issue as the OP. I finally switched from the Magic Mouse back to a Logitech trackball, and haven't looked back. Note that you could keep both "mice" connected to your Mac, and use one or the other, depending on the application. I use my Magic Mouse the majority of the time, and push my trackball behind my iMac, so it is out of the way.

All this has strengthened my resolve not to bother with a magic mouse, even though (for the third time) my mighty mouse track ball has given up on me (no amount of cleaning as per Apple instructions helps).

Was there ever a resolution to this? It's really frustrating to catch the horizontal scroll on magic mouse by accident, only to have to wait 15 seconds for sibelius to stop moving around!

Don't want to disable OS-wide scrolling, as the response in other apps is fine - just sibelius which struggles.

PS ow using Sib 7
