Sib. 6.1: How to quantize midi notes
Posted by Peter Roos - 22 Mar 10:58PM
Good afternoon everyone:

A quick question on flexi time input: after entering notes using flexi time in one of the staves, the score looks great (all neat 1/8 notes lined up in a row).

The playback however is sloppy, reflecting my rather poor keyboard skills. I suppose that that is because Sibelius records exactly what I am doing, without embellishing it; it only embellishes the notation.

Is there a way however to 'quantize' the midi note values somewhat, for example, by maximizing the note start to a range of say +/- 10? (I am referring to the 'note start position' in the properties window), and perhaps also something similar for the note duration? I'd like to hide my piano chops (or lack thereof) while at the same time not making it completely mechanical. I can go through the line note by note and adjust the properties one by one in the properties, however I'm wondering if there is an easier and quicker way or some kind of plugin I could use.

Thanks!

There's no shortcut for this as far as I know. Best to switch off Live Playback if your playing is sloppy.

Thank you Daniel!

It would be cool to have this a feature in a future edition. I know I am a terrible piano player but I am trying to 'humanize' my scores from time to time by playing parts live. Sometimes that works out well, sometimes it doesn't. For the latter situation I'd like to have a 'safety net' feature so I can take off the rough edges when I go really overboard.

Thanks again!

You're asking Sibelius, a score publishing program, to be a
performance sequencer. Why not use a sequencer?

I do, but I prefer to keep working in Sibelius as long as possible before exporting a score to a sequencing program. Sibelius is really clever when it comes to normalizing / quantizing the layout, it would be nice and save time to have some of the same intelligent features extended to the way the midi notes are recorded.

Many if not all sequencing programs have tools to quantize midi notes (and then 'humanize' them back again by adding little variations in velocity or note length) but the notation features in those program are often not too impressive. It would be cool to have a program that is strong on both counts, as another step to bridge the gap between the way a score looks and how it sounds.

1. Because the sounds in Sibelius are fantastic and better than many sequencers?
2. Because maybe you want to play the notes in to a score you want to give to players, but you don't want them to hear and learn the timing errors?
3. Because it's a pretty basic function in any music-making app?
4. Because it increases it's usability with things like Harrison Mixbus (has no midi) or sequencers that have poor orchestral sounds (like Ableton) or inferior scoring (Logic, ProTools etc)
5. It increases the userbase. I'm rewiring it inside ProTools, not for it's scoring - although that's really fun - but because of it's sound library.

I don't think this question needs justification. I was wondering the same thing.
