Sib. 5.x: Sibelius first Number of bars in a system
Posted by Harvey Pollins - 05 Mar 06:02PM
Hi

Please can someone help.
I am using Sibelius vers 5.2.1. Every time I start Sibelius First every system contains 4 bars. My questions are:-
1. How do I specify the number of bars in a system
2. How do I specify the numbers of bars there are in a particular system during during leadsheet creation.

Thanks for your help

Do you have:
Create>Other>Bar Change
in Sib 1rst menu up top???

EDIT:
Ahh, forgive me . . .
Under Sib First and 6 comparison at:
http://www.sibelius.com/products/sibelius_first/features.html
(see screenshot) it says:
At start of system only; can't restart bar numbering"
regarding Sib First.

Hi Richie

Thanks for your prompt response. However in Sebelius First vers 5.2.1 the instruction Create>Other>Bar Change doesn't exist. I don't mind if at start-up it's 4 bars per system. I am more concerned that I can can't change the number of bars at all. Do you know if there is a patch available that will allow me to change the number of bars per system even if the method to acheive it is convoluted.

Thanks

Yes Harvey, you are correct,

Always read the post as it is last written before you post (not just your email), as there are usually edits.

My post above says:

Sib First is pared down a little, though a fine program, not equal to professional needs. You might look into the Sib 6 upgrade?

Bar Changes changes the bar number assigned to a given bar, not the number of bars per system. So even though it is not available it is not an issue here.

Sibelius will, by default, fit the number of bars on a system based on the contents of the bars. So if you have a bar with a lot of small notes, there will be fewer bars per system.

You can add manual system breaks by selecting a barline and clicking Enter, but that is about the only formatting option you have in Sib First (Full Sibelius has a lot more formatting control).

In a pinch, if you need to squeeze more bars into a system you can go to Layout Document Setup and reduce the staff size a bit so more bars will fit.

I don't really see much else that you can do in First (even if Sibelius 6 First, which is the version I have).

Hi Bob

Hi Bob
Thanks for you input. At least you have solved 50% of the problem i.e. reducing the number of bars in a system. For a company such as Sibelius, one would have thought that numbers of bars per system would have been included in the software or a patch produced to overcome that problem. It is such a basic requirement.

Once again heartfelt thanks for your solution

Harvey

Hi Bob

Problem solved. Bob, you put me on the right track. If I want more bars in a system all I have to do is go to the end of the system in question, left click the end bar line and press Enter. The system will now contain double the number of bars that were there beforehand. Hence a 4 bar system is now 8 bars. If you only want 5 bar system, left click the right hand bar line of the 5th bar and press enter. Like most things - the solution is trivial. This may be written up in the the 187 page Manual - but I couldn't find it. For someone like me who is a new comer to Sibelius I don't want to have to plough through the manual everytime I want to write something. As a result I have generated a simple basic table(in Word) with 50 one liner entries that acts as quick reference guide. The table covers at least 80% or more of the things I want to do. I am surprised that Sibelius hasn't produced something similar. Once again, thanks for putting me on the right track

Harvey

Hi Harvey,

Strictly speaking selecting the end barline of a system and pressing ENTER cancels the system break and amalgamates the 2 systems.

Another way to determine the number of bars in a system is to select the first bar - shift click the last bar - SHIFT/ALT M turns your selection into a system. This works in Sib 6.1 - sorry if it's not a feature in Sib First.

The Sib 6 pdf reference guide has a Menus and Shortcuts chapter which I find very useful - again sorry if this doesn't apply to Sibelius First

Hi Colin

Thanks for your input BUT it doesn't work with my version 5.2.1 - so I'll stick to the method outlined in my previous response.

Harvey, the reason that this happens is that the 'Lead sheet' example score is set to use auto system breaks by default. Sibelius First doesn't provide any control over auto layout (called Auto Breaks in Sibelius 6) so any score you open up that has auto layout enabled cannot be edited in the way it can in the full Sibelius product.

However, there's no reason to start your lead sheet from the 'Lead sheet' manuscript paper if you don't want four bars per system: just start from 'Blank' and you'll be prompted to add an instrument when you go to the next page of the dialog.

Now you will find that Sibelius will flow bars naturally from one system to the next without enforcing any particular number per system, and you can add system breaks where required via selecting a barline and hitting Return.
