Sibelius - the leading music composition and notation software

In theory it should be as simple as starting a score with one of the Inkpen2 or Reprise house styles, so that the general "look" is handwritten, then go to House Style > Edit All Fonts, and set 'Main music font' to Jazz from the drop-down.

Obviously you must have the Jazz fonts installed on your computer for this to work!

Thanks for the theory, Daniel! I got that far. I have Jazz fonts installed and I have changed the fonts in Edit All Fonts, but when I try to input Expressions like mp, ff and so on I get garbage. Do you know if there is a workaround or a House Style for that. There must be people out there who like Jazz font. Inkpen2 and Reprise are great, but sometimes a client asks for a Jazz font.

The trouble is that the Jazz font doesn't include a font that is equivalent to (say) Opus Text, which is the text font that Sibelius uses for the special dynamic characters. JazzText is a regular script font (the equivalent of, say, Inkpen2 Script), so it doesn't contain characters that look like dynamics.

You could set the Expression text style to use Jazz itself, and then type e.g. f for forte, F for mezzoforte, p for piano, P for mezzopiano, etc., but if you need to mix dynamics with other words like "cresc." you'll need to manually change the font.

Alex,

Sib has a very nice alternative to the Finale Rehearsal Letter Font (in black in screenshot). Not only that, the Finale rehearsal marks couldn't be put in consecutively using Ctrl/Cmmd + "R" and I put them into Symbols and had to tediously enter them. It became too much trouble.

Once I discovered the Sib Rehearsal Marks all was good.
The Green Rehearsal Mark is bold "Reprise Rehearsal" in:
House Style>Edit Text Styles

then in:
Engraving Rules>Rehearsal Marks I put "[" for Prefix and "]" for Suffix.

I've had no complaints from clients after that as the fonts are so similar in all other respects.

I still use the Coda and D.S. markings in Finale I believe.

What font does everyone use for dynamics in jazz charts?

It's been a while since I've done one, but I think I remember Inkpen Text just used small capital letters for dynamics, which looked really strange. Either that, or the standard Opus dynamics, which also look really strange.

Enquiring minds want to know. (Especially since I hope to be doing more charts later this year.)

I've been using small letters, Inkpen 2 Text for Expression Text/dynamics.

It has a nice rounded "Real Book" look.

Richie, looks like those dynamics in your score are italicised. Given that the font itself is italicised, you're shearing the characters more than we intended by also setting them to be italic. Just in case you care :^)

Interesting Daniel . . . you've got a very good eye for these sort of things.

I tried the un-italized (by me) Expression Text and think I prefer it as it is.

I might as well mention this:
In the Expression Text pull-down menu screenshot (towards the bottom), in red, are word names such as: legato, leggiero, etc.,
that seem to be an entirely different font.

It's not a problem for me as I rarely if ever use them, but I was curious as to if this is as they should be???

Looks like you've got the Expression text style set to use the Inkpen2 Text font, which isn't right: it should typically be set to Inkpen2 Script in a score that uses Inkpen2.

Strange,

I set Expression Text from Inkpen2 Text to Inkpen2 and not much change.
("cresc." prints out strangely, most likely my set up in "Edit all Fonts".)
(See screenshot.)

When I go to:
House Style>Edit all Fonts
I see I'm using:
Inkpen2 Text for "Music Text Font"

I change it to Inkpen2 and all dynamic marks in my score disappear plus I only have plain looking dynamic marks in the menu.

I've set up my fonts so they work, not traditionally, but I like them.
It might be best to leave as is.

I spent too much time trying to figure out the Jazz font. I should concentrate on music! After all that trouble I think Inkpen is as good and I also like Reprise for lead sheets.

Georgia / italics / bold looks right for me for expression. Try that
