Sib. 6.1: Annoying message when adding measures
Posted by Mike Bell - 07 Jan 04:09PM
All,

Hey, for years I've been plagued by the following message in Sib, when adding a bunch of measures (or other things) that carries the cursor off the page on the screen: "There is something selected which is not in view. Do you want to create the new object next to it?"

Any way to shut it off? I've looked without success.

Cheers,

Mike

Nope, there's no way to disable this message at the moment, I'm afraid. But you should find that if you're simply adding bars with Command-B, this message never appears.

Yes, it doesn't then, when one is adding bars at the end. But when one is adding bars midstream, as my internal editor often has me do, using shift-command-B, then the message appears as soon as the cursor is off the page in view. Alas.

Why does that message ever even come up? It has never been a help for me, at any rate.

It's in case you have e.g. a note selected, then scroll somewhere else in the score, then hit (say) Command-T to add Technique text. Sibelius always creates the text next to the selected note, but the selected note is now out of view, so it asks you: do you want to create the object where the selected note is, or do you instead want to click to place the object?

I think it's a great feature. I'd in fact be happy with a warning if I do *anything* with something highlighted out of view.

I've found that "There is something selected which is not in view. Do you want to create the new object next to it?" has been a nuisance 100% of the time when it appears. I can accept it may be helpful to some people, but my vote would be to get rid of it (or at least make it possible to disable it).

In a big score the trouble is without the warning you might change something accidentally and not know where it is if you can't remember what was previously highighted. I know Undo would fix it, but I want to see it right itself.

One thing that disables this message is of you go to preferences->mouse and check 'click mouse to position' new objects. But that might mess with your workflow.

Sorry 'bout posting a weeks late addition to this thread, but ...

I get this message a LOT (because I'm careless). I'd love to be able to disable it sort of in the opposite direction: make it always assume "No". If I've got something selected off-page, deselect it and give me the cursor so I pick a new position. I've NEVER wanted it to use the old selection.

I'll add to the same thread as the problem is exactly the one described above. The feature doesn't work as expected. I have the play cursor, the selected bar and the whole page I'm editing on the same display and still I get the message. It's just a completely unnecessary extra click when adding bars in the middle of the piece and it's getting really annoying in the long run.
