Sib. 6.1: Mac with Sibelius
Posted by Daniel Tipton - 14 Nov 10:03PM
I just installed Sibelius and AudioScore to my new Mac Book Pro (OS X 10.6.2), and I can't open Sibelius. The installation went successful, and there was no trouble during the whole installation process that I noticed (I even followed the handbook instructions and re-installed 3 times), but when i open Sibelius, a window pops up saying that Sibelius has to be run by the administrator first, even though my Mac Account that I installed Sibelius to IS the admin account of this Laptop. Whats going on? Help me fix this please.

This is Daniel's advice in a previous similar thread:

It sounds like a permissions problem. Go to:
Hard Drive/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software
and do Command-I to see its permissions: make sure they are set to 'Read & Write' for both your own user and the group.

If this doesn't do the trick, post back!

Go to /Library/Application Support (not in your Users folder but in the root of the Mac's hard disk) and try the same fix there.

I've had a similar problem with Sibelius 5 in the past (on another computer) and never really resolved it. In the end, i discovered that one of my admin users could register it and use it, and after that all was fine.

so your saying I should just make another admin account, and try using sibelius on that account?

Might be worth a try. Unfortunately the computer i had this problem on is now dead so I can't go back and look at what I did. From memory, I had an original admin user, then created 2nd admin user. Sibelius wouldn't haven't any truck with the 2nd, so I had to keep runnning back to the first to install and register. I think I was able to run it on the 2nd, but not register it. And after that, if I used the 2nd to run Sibelius, I got some kind of message on boot up which only stopped after I'd run the app on the original user once.

If any of this sounds familiar, I hope it helps. Good luck anyway.

You know, I didn't even realize I had the same Sibelius Files in two separate Application Support Folders!!!

I don't want to speak for Daniel, but I don't think this is what he meant. Starting another administrator account is often used as a way of checking if the settings (such as the one Daniel is talking about) are correct or if the error is in a Mac computer itself. (99.9999 times the settings are incorrect.)

(You may want to do this but you should always be able to work with Sibelius on your account.)

Where I was sending you was:
Hard Drive/Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software . . . which is in your Home Folder and pertains to you only as a User.

Where Daniel asked to go was:
Your Hard Drive/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software
(This' I believe' if for ALL users and must be correct even if you are the only person using your computer.)

Click once on the Sibelius Software Folder when you get there to select it and then push Cmmd + I (shortcut for File>Get Info on top of your screen). You will see a menu box like the one in the screenshot below.

You may have to click on the lock in the lower right-hand corner to change permissions if necessary, it simply asks you to enter your main computer password.

If you are the main user of your computer, make sure that "system" and "admin" read "Read and Write" as in the purple box. If not, change it in the pull down menu.

In System Preferences>Accounts you should be an "Administrator". System Preferences is in your Application Folder if not on your Dock.
DOUBLE CHECK THIS!!!

You have to be a little like Sherlock Holmes w/this type of stuff, so I would do this in the location Daniel spoke of and the one I spoke of also, though Daniel may have specific reasons to direct you to:
HD/Library/Application Support/Sibelius Software

I would even check the Sibelius 5 Folder inside the Sibelius Software Folders for correct permissions, but that's just me, and it may be overkill.

Let us know how it goes!

Here's what fixed it for us!

Our lab computers are configured against an Open Directory server, and when students log in, a mobile account is created on the fly. Something about the way Sibelius checks for admin status gets tripped up if there are too many groups; and since each student mobile account has a corresponding group, there were 80-odd groups on each lab machine (the number grows over time as more students log in on that machine).

I scripted the removal of all mobile accounts and associated groups, and then Sibelius worked! Daniel S's post in this thread started me down the right path, but the commands he posted didn't work for me; instead, I did this:

----
# "odmaster" = hostname of your Open Directory server.

# Delete all mobile users
for cuser in `dscl . -list /Users AuthenticationAuthority | grep odmaster |
awk '{print $1}' | tr '\n' ' '`; do
dscl . -delete /Users/$cuser
done

# Delete all mobile user groups (they all have "sharepoint" in the name)
for cgroup in `dscl . -list /Groups | grep sharepoint | tr '\n' ' '`; do
dscl . -delete /Groups/$cgroup
done
----

In case it helps anyone else.

Thanks all,

By the way, Daniel T., you said you are running 10.6.2 on a "new" MBP. Well, I suspect that was a typo, because it's been a long time since 10.6.2 was the current OS. I suspect you're running 10.*7*.02.

If I'm correct about that, then you'll find that you're unable to even *access* your user Library folder--unless you know the following trick:

Hold down your Option key and select "Library" from the "Go" menu in the Finder. (The user Library has become a hidden folder in 10.7, visible nowhere, unless you use the Option trick.)

If my suspicions were wrong, ignore. ;-)

Sometimes these forum threads wonder away from the original subject. Daniel Tipton and I seem to have the identical problem. Neither of us have Open Directory Lab Computer systems, although that info will probably be helpful to someone, but it's not helpful to me.

1) I have an iMac. OS 10.13.6. My legal copy of Sibelius is installed on this computer and opens showing the serial number on the splash screen. I say this because we recently went through a flood at the office which destroyed boxes of files and I can no longer locate the original disk.

2) I am trying to register Sibelius 5.... yes I know, it's an older version... I am a professional Finale user and bought Sibelius 5 a few years ago when a client brought me some Sibelius files I had to work on. Same situation today in that I was given a Christmas album done on Sibelius -- newer version, but I had a friend save the files as Version 5.... They all open correctly, but I can't save or export because it says I'm not registered.

3) I get the error message that I can't register Sibelius unless I am a computer administrator. Which I am.... I'm actually the ONLY user on this computer.

4) I have followed tips of checking BOTH Library folders and making sure all permissions were READ & WRITE for everyone.

5) Sibelius still won't let me register.... I guess that's obvious or I wouldn't be writing this post. I have asked for help from Avid, but haven't heard anything. On Monday, if I haven't heard anything, I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy the $99 support package. If they give me helpful answers, I'll post them here to help anyone else in this same situation.

Any more ideas on this specific situation?

I would greatly appreciate any help you may have.

Sibelius 5 on macOS 10.6 onwards is not officially supported by Avid.

All Sibelius versions earlier than 7.0 will not register online correctly on macOS 10.7 onwards: you have to take the alternative route of registering via a web-browser.

Sibelius 5 crashes on macOS 10.8 onwards whenever playback is attempted.

You need to update Sibelius 5 to version 5.4 before trying to register it or use it in any way.
