Sib. 6.1: New key signature - how to cancel old key signature?
Posted by Norm Johnstone - 01 Nov 07:57PM
Hello All,

I was just wondering if there is a way in Sibelius to cancel the old key signature when introducing a new key signature. ie. if you were in the key of G (1 sharp), and introduced a new key of say Bb (2 flats), how do you show the F# in the key of G as F natural and then show your two flats for Bb?

Thanks,

Norm

Hi Norm,

I'm not sure if I'm following you correctly here, but when a new key signature is introduced (ie. going from G to Bb) it's taken that simply by introducing a new key signature (in this case Bb) the old F# now becomes F natural. There is no need to write a natural sign on the F line.
If I need to change key at some point in a score I just hit the "K" key, select the key I want from the menu, click OK, and when I'm returned to my score my cursor has changed colour. I then click on the bar where I want to new key signature to be inserted. The new key signature then appears.
As I say, I'm not sure if I'm following your initial question correctly.
David.

Hi David,

Thank-you for your reply. I understand that this might be a debatable subject, however I have seen quite often when a new key is introduced, the new key signature appears, and then all the cancelled sharps or flats appear right after--(related to the previous key), usually only once, and then from that point on each new staff will only show the current key.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Norm

Hi there

Go to Engraving Rules>Clefs and Key Signatures and, under 'Key Signatures', tick the box for 'Cautionary naturals'.

David is correct that modern engraving practice doesn't use them, which is presumably why this option is unticked by default.

Hope that helps

Sorry Norm. I now see what you mean. Yes, I've often seen what you are describing. However, Jeremy seems to have solved the problem. Thanks Jeremy, I wasn't aware of that feature in Sibelius. I'll bear it in mind because I'm sure that there will be a time when I feel that I need to use it.
David.

Particulary useful when the key changes to C/Am!

Sibelius uses naturals regardless of the setting in this case.
