Sib. 6.1: Curlew sign
Posted by Dave LaDelfa - 23 Oct 03:55PM
I went to put this in a score I'm working on and was surprised not to find it in the symbols list. Is it there and I'm just not seeing it?

To clarify, this is the fermata-like mark that Britten initially devised for his "Curlew River" (1964) which indicates that in uncoordinated passages the player should sustain a note or rest until a resynchronization point for the whole ensemble. It looks sort of like the number three rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

If I'm correct that it's not there, I'd like to petition to have it included in some forthcoming revision of the symbol font.

And in the meantime, has anyone else figured out a way to show one of these in a Sibelius score?

This symbol is indeed not included in Sibelius's fonts at the moment. We'd be happy to add it in due course. To save me going to buy a copy of 'Curlew River', could you scan a picture of the sign and send it to me?

I used a graphic the last time I needed this. I'll send Daniel a score directly.

If requests for future zymbols are being considered, could I make a plea for a random-looking wiggly line to signify a free glissando on harp? Trying to construct one using elements from the Lines menu takes an age, and doesn't look right anyway.

I experimented with graphics, but was never able to create something that could be superimposed on the stave without obliterating large bits of it.

Much appreciated, Daniel, Jeremy.

I can hit the library and scan a couple clear examples from the vocal score if need be. If memory serves, it also appears in "Death In Venice" and a couple other of his later works.

Curlew River's a beautiful score to look at. I get it out from time to time to admire Britten's writing and the setting.

Snippet including the curlew sign attached for those interested.

The autography in the vocal score is very neat. I wonder if it's Imogen Holst's work?

At any rate, I could have sworn I've seen the curlew mark on a traditionally engraved page somewhere ... maybe it was the "Death in Venice" vocal score. I assume by that point someone in the engraving department at Boosey had gotten around to making a stamp for it. If so, that might make a better model for the glyph than the hand-drawn one above.

I use my own eccentric sign from my own font, rather more like a skua than a curlew, but I can cobble together a recognisable curlew symbol, using available symbols, as shown.

(Edited a couple of times to try to say what I meant).
