Sib. 6.0: Sibelius 6.0.3 on Mac causes Finder to crash?
Posted by Aaron Gervais - 24 Sep 04:50AM
I just noticed something that I thought was a factor of my old MBP, but that now would seem to be related somehow to Sibelius.

I noticed on the MBP that eventually Sibelius would get slow, regardless of the size of the score (4 parts to 30 parts), and the computer fans would kick into high gear. I would have to restart the computer to get it back to normal. I just figured I was running too many things on my old computer and maxing out the ram.

But I recently got a Mac Pro and I noticed the same issue. After working on a score for an hour or so, suddenly it gets slow again and I hear the fans whirring away. I checked Activity Monitor and half my ram was free and so was 80% of the CPU. Sibelius was using a normal amount of CPU, but the Finder seemed to be stuck in a feedback loop and said it was using 200% CPU. I relaunched the Finder and everything was working normally again.

I've never seen the finder do this with any other software, but I have noticed it consistently with my Sibelius sessions since 6 has been released. Has anyone else noticed this?

It could be caused by the Spotlight importer, which on some systems seems to crash with alarming regularity, with the appearance of tying up one of your computer's CPUs. Try this:

1. Right-click on the Sibelius 6 application package in Applications.
2. Choose Show Package Contents.
3. In the window that appears, go into Contents/Library/Spotlight.
4. Trash the SibeliusScore.mdimporter file, and empty the Trash.

Now see if things appear to behave themselves a bit better. If you also still have Sibelius 5 installed, you may want to do the same to that version.

We have found some ways to tighten up the Spotlight importer to prevent it from crashing so frequently, so this should be unnecessary in future versions.

This may be a super outdated thread, but I just ran into an issue with this where my Time Machine backup was stalling out because of this file. I'm still running Sibelius 6.2 and once I moved the .mdimporter file out of that folder, it finally worked. I had tried repairing disk permissions on my HD and my external, etc...all the usual fixes.

But there was the error message in my console:

mdworker32[24355]: (Warning) Import: import uti:com.sibelius.score plugin:/Sibelius 6.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/SibeliusScore.mdimporter uuid:8FDAAD0D-4424-455C-BD18-4FC45D0DE23D 6.2.0f88 exceeded cpu use limits (12) after 27999 milliseconds sizing:0 - find suspect file using: sudo mdutil -t 37324532

This appeared over and over and over when trying to backup.

Once I removed it, I got this:

mdworker32[24429]: (Error) Import: BAD IMPORTER ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ file:///Applications/Sibelius%20Software/Sibelius%206.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/SibeliusScore.mdimporter/

Then backed up, put the file back, and ran ANOTHER backup.

Got this:

mds_stores[23113]: (/private/var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000/T)(Error) IndexStore in void preProcess(const void *, const void *, void *):_kMDItemTimeMachinePath319060357 = Applications/Sibelius Software/Sibelius 6.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/SibeliusScore.mdimporter

What does this file do? The answer on this thread was to delete it, but do I need it?

Thanks!!
