Sib. 5.x: Sibelius 5 and Snow Leopard
Posted by Ben A - 29 Aug 07:46AM (edited 29 Aug 07:54AM)
After being assured that Sibelius 5 should work fine and that the program was on the do not break list for Apple, I found that the mixer would not work on the program. I am terribly irritated by the lack of support. This is the second time in 2 years that I have been forced to upgrade Sibelius to work with my operating system. I'm not so sure that I'll continue using Sibelius it happens again, especially if it happens only three months after a new version of the software is released.

same problem here, and same feelings. I upgraded because we were told there were no major problems! I can't open the mixer... that's rather major.

I'll have to check this with Apple. We were told that they had included versions of Sibelius up to and including Sibelius 5.2.5 on a list of programs that would be excluded from being affected by a particular change in the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) that would cause this problem (which is fixed in Sibelius 6).

I'm very sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are committed to supporting Mac OS X 10.6 and Windows 7 with the current versions of our products, but it's not always practical for us to provide updates for older versions of our software to provide compatibility with new operating systems; in some cases (e.g. for Sibelius 4 and earlier) it's basically impossible.

We will look into this further with Apple and I'll report back in due course.

I have just installed Snow Leopard on Macbook and Sibelius will not stay open for more than a second. i am not in a position to upgrade to Sibelius 6 at this time.

This would simply be a bug fix and should be made available.

After panicing for awhile I found out that this is related to the mixer window, first cancel at the start a score window, then press M, and then start a score, it should work then.

Sibelius really need to start offering online update on their programs, I had a deadline that this almost ruined for me, at least as emergency I could have bought the update online and voilá, but nooooooo

What on earth made you install a new operating system while working
towards a deadline? At the very least, you should have had a full
system backup so that if everything didn't work you could roll back.

And you should not have lost sight of the fact that localised versions of Sibelius 6 haven't even been released - Sibelius 5 is the current version in many countries. It wouldn't be impossible to provide Snow Leopard support in Sibelius 5 with a simple bug fix.
However, I'm very irritated by this kind of support.

1. I had backup
2. I had not heard that sib 5 was supposed to be incompatible, I mean common, snow beta has been out for almost a year or smth.
3. It was not a risky deadline
4. Thought you would be happy to get a solution to the problem.

So you over-dramatised your plight in order to take a pop at Sibelius?

Hi Daniel,

same Problem here with the German 5.1.0 (42) and Snow Leopard. Immediately after opening the mixer (m) Sib5 terminates.

Looking forward to the German 6.0.3 in October but would still appreciate a fix for the 5.1

I'm not exactly sure of the exact sequence of actions, but it seemed to work for Steingrimur.

Hope it helps

don´t open anything, just cancel at the start new score screen, then press M, worked for me. You can see it under window if Mixer is tagged or not. Be sure you are working in Sibelius though, left corner on the mac.

Steigrimur,
Could you please re-explain the procedure? It may be very important for those like me who got stuck between not working Sibelius 5, very uncomfortable option of downgrading to Leopard and a deadline for writing the score. What do you mean by "cancel at the start a score window"? Like you open S5, begin loading your score and in the middle you cancel it? I tried, but no go. Once score begins loading no one can stop it until it is fully loaded. And then, Mixer is in non-accessible state (this is on my MacPro). So again, explaining the procedure will be most appreciated. I just had another unexpected experience. S5 installed on my second machine - MacBookPro simply exploded when I touched the mixer. It is getting better with every minute. Waiting for the procedure.

The best workaround for now is to trash your preferences (/Users/[your username]/Library/Preferences/com.sibelius.sibelius5.plist), which will ensure that the Mixer is hidden next time you start Sibelius. Then simply don't show it. You may even find it helpful to go to the Menus and Shortcuts page of Preferences and switch off the 'Enable feature' checkbox for the Mixer option in the Window menu category, so that you do not accidentally show the Mixer and cause Sibelius to crash, with the risk of losing work.

We have heard back from Apple now: they have apologised for not fixing this in the final release of Snow Leopard despite knowing about it several months ago and asked us to fix it ourselves. We are looking into doing this and I hope to have more news next week.

I just cancelled the startup template, so I start with completely clean Sib with just the sib. menu on top of screen. Then I just press M to disable the mixer. Then I can start up scores.... You can check in the menu if the mixer is enabled or not before starting any scores.

This is not a workaround if you happen to use the Mixer. My Sibelius doesn't crash, but Mixer does not work with any of these workarounds. Sibelius 5 was the current version less than 6 months ago when I paid full price for it. Is it already obsolete?

James Ivey asked me to click on this link

http://www.sibelius.com/helpcenter/snowleopard.html

I assume to read the following

"Previous versions of Sibelius on Mac OS X 10.6
Versions of Sibelius prior to Sibelius 6.0.3 are not officially supported on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Sibelius 6 users must update to Sibelius 6.0.3 or later.
Users of Sibelius 5 and earlier, and of Sibelius First and Sibelius Student, should note that these versions of Sibelius are not officially supported on Mac OS X 10.6. Our technical support staff will not be able to provide detailed help with running older versions of Sibelius on Mac OS X 10.6.
However, in our limited testing, no major problems have been found with Sibelius 5, Sibelius First, Sibelius Student or Sibelius 4, but please note the following:
Sibelius 5.2.5, Sibelius 5 Student and Sibelius 5 First:
If you find that Sibelius produces an error when you try to enter your serial number after running the software for the first time:
In the Finder, go to /Library/Application Support
Select the Sibelius Software folder and type Command-I to show the Get Info window
Scroll to the bottom of the window and check the section marked Sharing & Permissions: check that both system and admin are set to Read & Write. If either of these is set to Read only, click the lock icon at the bottom right-hand corner to provide your administrator password in order to change the permissions on the folder.
Now try running Sibelius again."

Finale anyone??

Re: Sib. 5.x: Sibelius 5 and Snow Leopard

You'll find that Finale is not supported on Snow Leopard for versions earlier than the current version, I'm afraid. This is very common with software vendors: when a new version of an operating system comes out after an older version of an application has already been replaced by a newer version, it's quite uncommon for the vendor to patch the older version of the software. Microsoft won't be patching Office 2004, and Adobe won't be patching CS3.

That said, I refer you to what I posted earlier today in this very thread:

We have heard back from Apple now: they have apologised for not fixing this in the final release of Snow Leopard despite knowing about it several months ago and asked us to fix it ourselves. We are looking into doing this and I hope to have more news next week.

i.e. Apple were intending to fix this on the OS side, and told us as much some months ago, but their fix either does not work or is not present, and they have asked us to fix it. We are now looking at fixing it, and if we can fix it, we will release a patch for Sibelius 5 that solves it. I really don't think you can ask for us to do more than that; it's considerably more than you will find other software vendors doing.

First of all, I really appreciate your help, Daniel (and the whole Sibelius team).

You'll find that Finale is not supported on Snow Leopard for versions earlier than the current version, I'm afraid. Please keep in mind that Sibelius 5 is the current version in many countries, as I said before. The current versions of Office and Adobe's CS are available in all languages, but Sibelius isn't (even if it won't take much more than a few weeks before localised versions are released).

But again, thank you for your efforts. It's quite uncommon to have the chance to communicate directly to the development team through a forum like this.

Best regards,

Maximilian

We took steps to ensure that Sibelius 5 would work in Snow Leopard, working directly with Apple over the course of the development of the new OS. As a result, we did not expect to have to release an update for Sibelius 5 compatibility under Snow Leopard. However, something went awry with Apple's fix(es), and so we are now forced into looking at doing a patch ourselves.

This does not change our support stance, however: Sibelius 5 will not be supported on Snow Leopard. We will issue a patch once we have worked out how best to solve the known compatibility problem, but only Sibelius 6 is supported on Snow Leopard.

Daniel, I fully understand your policy of always supporting just the newest version of Sib. But I'm on the German 5.2.5 and that is the newest version in my country. Don't get me wrong, of course you are not responsible for changes in Apple's OS after the release of Sib5 so I really appreciate your efforts to provide a "grace" fix for the 5.2.5.

In order not to run into troubles again in future I'm seriously thinking about a complete switch from the German to the English version. Always being about one year behind the official development and the newest available release of Sib doesn't feel so good anyway.

Would an upgrade from the German 5.2.5 to the English 6.0.3 be possible?

Regards Holger

Re: Sib. 5.x: Sibelius 5 and Snow Leopard

The German version is not a year behind the English version: for Sibelius 5 it was less than six months, and for Sibelius 6 it will be less than four months. For Sibelius 6, we will release all of the localised versions (in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese) at the same time, all within four months of the release of the English version.

Anyway, all that said, it is possible to upgrade from German Sibelius 5 to English Sibelius 6; our German distributor, M3C, can help you. But we are always striving to get the localised versions out quicker, and it is now only a matter of a few weeks before the German version of Sibelius 6 will be available, so I would recommend that you hold tight for now.

I agree with this completely. I NEED the Mixer window for the work i do. Every time i open the mixer the programme crashes.

Even today i made an attempt to purchase the Sibelius 6 Educational upgrade for my Educational version for £99 but when i click on it through the Educational section and type in my serial number i get a charge of £169 for the Pro Version. I just don't know . . .

> This is not a workaround if you happen to use the Mixer. My Sibelius doesn't crash, but Mixer does not work with any of these workarounds. Sibelius 5 was the current version less than 6 months ago when I paid full price for it. Is it already obsolete?

Edward, you have two copies of Sibelius registered; an educational license of Sibelius 3, and a professional license of Sibelius 5. If you upgrade your professional copy of Sibelius 5, you will be charged the professional price.

Thanks for that Daniel. Must look for my CD of version 3. Think i had it on an old computer that broke. If i can't find the serial number to upgrade the educational one would Sibelius have it on file?

Yes, Sibelius 6 will work on Mac; if you're already using Snow Leopard, you'll need to download and install the Sibelius 6.0.3 update after installing Sibelius 6.

Any updates on an update for Sibelius 5? Is there an estimate on how long we might have to wait for it?

I think we've now got a good fix and it will be available in the next day or two. I'll post a new thread here when it's available.

Then if Sibelius is more important to you than Snow Leopard, why rush into running Snow Leopard before you're sure that your important applications work with no problems?

Anyway, this is all academic: we have the issue in hand and will post further information as soon as we can.

Excellent! Thank you, Dan for the frequent updating on the status during this process. It really makes a world of difference in supporting a product. THings can go wrong, but it's how it's handled that makes a difference.

I'm still using leopard I'm not that thick, i was trying out Snow leopard to see with apps Crapped out.
If you had told us there was a fix coming instead of winding people up by saying you weren't supporting 5 or" maybe" there'll be a fix, people would get so ratty.
Thank you ever so much for the update.

It's never our intention to wind people up, Ronny. This was an unusual situation, in which we had been working directly with Apple on a specific problem, and they had assured us that a fix would be included in Snow Leopard. We were as surprised as everybody else when it turned out that their fix didn't work properly, so we had not been planning to produce an update, and had said so. Anyway, all's well that ends well.
