Sib. 4.x: Moving and sizing of Ossia staff
Posted by Spiros Damianos - 22 Aug 11:12PM
Does anyone know if it is possible to manipulate an Ossia staff the same way as a regular one, without affecting the staff it's attached to. For instance, I created an Ossia under my staff and I want to move it (the same way you would move a regular staff. By clicking near the end of it to get the little square box). But every time I try, it also moves the staff on top simultaneously. The one that the Ossia is attached to. I would like to move the Ossia independently of the staff on top. Is this possible? I tried looking in the reference, but couldn't find anything related to this. I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

If you mean changing the horizontal position relative to the main staff, then no you can't do this - all staves that sound together in playback are bound together.

It may be possible to work around this, if you can post a description of what you need to do, and a sample score.

Is an ossia stave really "attached" to another stave? I thought it
was just a stave like any other with strategic "invisible" instrument
changes inserted.

You are using something akin to a 'Grand Stave' where both parts of the stave move if you move one part.

Don't use an Ossia staff — use a separate small staff and use Create > Other > Staff Type Change to 'No Lines (Hidden) where required to hide the staff when you don't need it
.
My advice is to input the Staff Type Changes that restore the staff before the ones that hide it, so you can see what you're doing.

This is actually much easier in later versions of Sibelius (where an Instrument Change can hide and restore the staff in a single action).

Isn't that exactly what an ossia stave is?

I find the staves of a dual-stave instrument (whether created directly
as e.g. a piano instrument, by "create stave above" or as an ossia)
drag up and down in exactly the same way as other staves. I'm
wondering if he's trying to drag an ossia SIDEWAYS?

Yes, I think that's right, based on '...By clicking near the end of it to get the little square box...'

In which case he has to realise an ossia stave is part of the
timeline, not a floating graphic. If he WANTS a non-playing floating
graphic that can be arranged in other ways of course.

Why do you want to shorten the Ossia staff? Can you move the rectangle that marks the 'hiding point' (which you can see if View > hidden Objects) is switched on).

Thanks for the responses guys. This is what I want to do. I've attached a jpeg of the staff in question. I would like to manipulate (move it horizontally and make it a bit smaller) the ossia staff. But, since the ossia staff is attached to the staff above, I won't be able to do that. So now, my question is, what can I do to have a small little measure underneath the staff. Something that's easily moveable and sizeable. My goal is to have a little measure as an example of the text. I want to show the quarter note triplets underneath the text that says "quarter note triplets (rhythmic ratio ratio = 1½ beats to 1)". I don't want to add another measure because then that will throw the rest of the page into the next page. The whole document is about 14 pages long. I also have to add some of these little reminder measures elsewhere in the document. I know I should have done all of this right from the beginning, but these were changes that occured after I had finished the entire thing. I'd would really appreciate any input once again. Thanks.

Create it on a spare page in Sibelius. Select it and export as a
graphic file. Then import the graphic to the position of your choice.
You can position and resize it as required.

Some projects, particularly those which consist of lots of separate
examples rather than continuous music, are easier to construct in a
DTP program, using separate graphics exported from Sibelius. It looks
as if your project is on the borderline of this.
